Roman Emperor Justinian built one of Christianity’s largest basilicas in the 4th Century A.D. over St. John’s burial site.
• The Temple of Artemis - Also known as Artemesium, the Temple of Artemis was one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Built by Croesus, king of Lydia, around 550 BCE, it was rebuilt after being burned by Herostratus in 356 BCE. The temple was famous for its size, over 350 by 180 feet (about 110 by 55 meters), and the magnificent artworks that adorned it.
