During the third Ecumenical Council in 431 AD in Ephesus, it was claimed that Mary arrived in Ephesus with St. John in 37 A.D. and lived there until her passing in 48 A.D. After the house’s discovery, the Archbishop of Izmir declared it a pilgrimage site in 1892. On July 26, 1967, Pope Paul VI visited and prayed there.
• Ancient City of Ephesus - A 10-minute drive from The House of Virgin Mary leads to Ephesus. Begin exploring one of Turkey’s main attractions, Ephesus, one of the 12 cities of the Ionian League (an ancient Greek district on Asia Minor’s western coast), located near Izmir. As a port city, it was a key departure point for trade routes into Asia Minor.

Stroll through history along marble streets lined with magnificent public buildings, including the Baths of Scholastica and the Library of Celsus, built in the early 2nd century A.D. by Gaius Julius Aquila as a tribute to his father, Gaius Julius Celsus Polemanus, the proconsul of the Province of Asia. The Temple of Hadrian and The Grand Theater are two of Ephesus’s most impressive structures. The Grand Theater, constructed in the 3rd century B.C., was later expanded by the Romans in the 1st century A.D. to accommodate 24,000 spectators.

• Ephesus Terrace Houses - Visit the Terrace Houses (included only in Private and with Terrace Houses Options) located on the slopes of Pion Mountain. There are six residential units built on three man-made terraces, inhabited by Ephesus’s wealthy citizens. These houses were lavishly decorated with wall frescoes and floor mosaics. Many steps lead from the bottom to the top.
• The Temple of Artemis - The final stop is the Artemission Temple, once one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, before returning to Kusadasi.
• Setur Kusadasi Marina Carsi - Return to Kusadasi along the shoreline, passing by Kusadasi Marina.
