Angkor Thom - Angkor Thom is a remarkable representation of supreme creativity. It embodies Buddhist cosmology on a grand scale, akin to a nation’s pride, showcasing concepts that only the most talented artists would dare to depict.
Angkor Thom South Gate - The south gate of Angkor Thom is a favorite among tourists, as it has been meticulously restored with many of the original heads still intact. This gate serves as the main entrance from Angkor Wat into Angkor Thom.
Bayon Temple - Constructed nearly a century after Angkor Wat, the Bayon Temple’s initial structure remains a mystery. Positioned at the heart of a royal city, it likely began as a temple-mountain symbolizing Mount Meru. The temple’s middle section was expanded during a second construction phase, with the current Bayon reflecting the final phase of its artistic style. The Bayon is renowned for its grandeur, with over 200 large faces carved on 54 towers, creating a majestic presence. The serene faces, with their subtle smiles and shadowed eyes, invite contemplation, as noted by P. Jennerat de Beerski in the 1920s.
Baphuon Temple - Baphuon Temple stands on a rectangular sandstone base with five levels of similar size, unlike the typical tiered design. The first three levels are encircled by sandstone galleries. Baphuon is notable for being the first structure to feature stone galleries with a central tower. Two cross-shaped libraries with four porches are located in the courtyard, originally linked by an elevated walkway supported by columns.
Phimeanakas - Situated near the center of the Royal Palace’s enclosed area, Phimeanakas Temple was once topped with a golden pinnacle, earning it the name “Tower of Gold” as described by Zhou Daguan. Built from roughly hewn sandstone blocks, the temple features minimal decoration.
Terrace of the Elephants - The elephants, ridden by servants and princes, move gracefully as if on a leisurely stroll. Their steps are even and unyielding to obstacles. The forest they traverse is impenetrable to all but the smallest creatures, who navigate through the undergrowth, and the largest animals, who create paths through the untouched vegetation.
Ta Prohm - Ta Prohm is the unrivaled capital of the “Kingdom of the Trees.” Left largely untouched by archaeologists, except for visitor pathways and structural reinforcements, it offers a glimpse into the awe experienced by early explorers in the 19th century. Enveloped in dense jungle, Ta Prohm exudes a romantic aura. Fig, banyan, and kapok trees spread their massive roots over stones, prying walls and terraces apart, while their branches form a canopy over the structures. Tree trunks twist among stone pillars, and the site’s mysterious charm captivates visitors as thoroughly as the roots entwine the walls and towers.
Angkor Wat - Angkor Wat, the largest and best-preserved monument of the Angkor group, is an architectural marvel. Its flawless composition, balance, proportions, reliefs, and sculptures make it one of the world’s finest monuments. It is widely believed that Angkor Wat served as a funerary temple for King Suryavarman II, oriented westward to symbolize the connection between the setting sun and death. The bas-reliefs, designed for viewing in the order of Hindu funerary rituals, support this interpretation.
Phnom Bakheng - Phnom Bakheng is a magnificent temple in its own right, renowned for offering a breathtaking view of the sunset over Angkor Wat.
Private Cruise to Tonle Sap Around Floating Village and City Tours
Tonle Sap Lake - Tonle Sap Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. Its size varies with the monsoon and dry seasons, and it is surrounded by five provinces. Over three million people live around its banks, with 90% relying on fishing and agriculture for their livelihoods. The lake is a vital commercial resource, supplying more than half of Cambodia’s fish consumption. The unique ecosystems and human settlements at the lake’s edges include floating villages, stilted houses, large fish traps, and a lifestyle deeply connected to the lake, its fish, wildlife, and the cycles of rising and falling waters.
Kampong Phluk Floating Village - Located about 30 km southeast of Siem Reap Town, Kampong Phluk is home to over 3,000 Khmer inhabitants. Their homes, made of wood and bamboo, are built on stilts 6 to 7 meters high. During the dry season, when the lake’s water level is low, these structures resemble skyscrapers. Many villagers move onto the lake, constructing temporary stilted houses. In the wet season, as water levels rise, they return to their permanent homes on the floodplain, with the stilts submerged. The community thrives on fishing and producing fish products such as fish paste, fermented fish, smoked fish, dried fish, and dried prawns.
Wat Preah Prom Rath - Wat Preah Prom Rath is one of Siem Reap’s oldest pagodas, featuring well-preserved 17th-century wall paintings. Although a Buddhist temple, some paintings depict the ancient Hindu love story of Rama and Shita, the strongest man and most beautiful woman of their time. Southeast Asian royal families claim descent from Rama. These Hindu-themed paintings are remarkable in a Buddhist temple. Wat Preah Prom Rath also houses a large collection of Buddha statues behind the main Buddha.
Artisans Angkor - Artisans Angkor is a Cambodian social enterprise that creates job opportunities for young people in rural areas while reviving traditional Khmer craftsmanship. Established in 1992, it is located on Stung Thmey Street, just a two-minute walk from the Old Market in Siem Reap Centre, Cambodia.
West Baray - The West Baray is a vast man-made lake, encircled by an earthen levee forming a dyke. According to legend, a ruler of Angkor’s young daughter was seized by a giant crocodile, creating a large opening in the south dyke of the West Baray, still visible today. The crocodile was captured and killed, and the princess was rescued alive from its stomach.
Svay Romiet Pagoda - Svay Romiet Pagoda is situated directly on the banks of the West Baray.
