- Bayon Temple - Tour begins at 9:00 AM with a visit to Bayon Temple. Situated at the heart of Angkor Thom, the ancient capital of the Khmer Empire, Bayon was constructed by King Jayavarman VII and is dedicated to Lord Lokesvara, a savior deity in Mahayana Buddhism.
Bayon Temple is renowned for its 49 towers, each featuring four smiling faces. This has led tourists to dub it the “Most Beautiful Smiling Faces Temple” globally. The faces smile in the four cardinal directions: East for Shiva, South for Brahma, West for Vishnu, and North for Indra. In Buddhist terms, these faces symbolize Lokesvara and King Jayavarman VII, representing the Buddha’s four precepts: Lovingkindness, Compassion, Joy, and Sincerity.
Some scholars propose that Bayon acts as a massive stone map of Cambodia, depicting the 54 provinces of that era. The temple comprises 49 towers, with five additional towers in Angkor Thom.
- Banteay Srei - Known as the most exquisite pink sandstone temple, Banteay Srei is located about 37 kilometers away. “Banteay Srei” translates to “Lady Temple,” and its allure lies in its exceptional preservation and small size, enhanced by intricate decorations. Banteay Srei is often hailed as a true gem of Khmer art.
Celebrated for its detailed carvings, some locals believe it was crafted by women, as reflected in its name, “Lady Temple.” Originally named Isvarapura, it was built by King Rajendravarman II in 967, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Visitors are often enchanted by its artistry and the tranquil ambiance surrounding this remarkable site. It stands as a testament to the Khmer artisans’ skill and creativity, making it a must-see for anyone exploring Cambodia’s wonders.
- Ta Prohm Temple - Ta Prohm is Cambodia’s most renowned jungle temple, famous for its appearance in the Hollywood film “Tomb Raider.” Constructed by King Jayavarman VII in 1186, the temple is dedicated to his mother, depicted as Prachnabaramita, the goddess of mercy and wisdom in Mahayana Buddhism. “Ta Prohm” means “Brahma God,” while its original name, “Rajavihara,” translates to “The Royal Monastery.”
Located northeast of Angkor Wat, it is a breathtaking site where nature and architecture merge. Towering trees and sprawling roots envelop the temple ruins, creating a stunning and dramatic landscape that captivates visitors. This unique blend of man-made and natural beauty makes Ta Prohm a favorite among tourists.
To fully enjoy the temple’s peaceful atmosphere and avoid crowds, visiting early in the morning or late in the afternoon is recommended. Besides its architectural significance, Ta Prohm also served as an important royal school.
- Angkor Wat - Angkor Wat is the world’s largest religious monument and is also the best preserved. It is an architectural masterpiece of the Khmer Empire. Its perfection in composition, balance, proportions, relief, and sculpture makes it one of the finest monuments globally.
Relief is a sculptural technique where the sculpted elements are attached to a solid background of the same material. The term “relief” originates from the Latin verb “relevo,” meaning “to raise.” Creating a relief sculpture gives the impression that the sculpted material is elevated above the background plane. When a relief is carved into a flat stone surface (relief sculpture) or wood (relief carving), the field is lowered, leaving the unsculpted areas appearing higher. This method requires extensive chiseling from the background, which can be time-consuming. However, a relief eliminates the need to form the rear of a subject, making it less fragile and more securely fixed.
