- Roluos Temples - Located 12 kilometers southeast of Siem Reap, the Roluos Group dates back to the 9th century AD and represents the remnants of King Indravarman I’s former capital. This group includes three uniquely different temple complexes—Bakong, Lolei, and Preah Ko—which were the first to be built. Constructed with durable materials like bricks and carved plaster, these temples were once expected to be adorned with precious materials and wood. They now stand as the earliest representation of Khmer civilization. The architectural style, decorative materials, and construction techniques of these temples mark the beginning of the Classic Period of Khmer Art. Today, a Buddhist monastery resides in the area, with its saffron-robed inhabitants taking pride in living near such a significant part of Khmer history.

The significance of the Angkor Archaeological Region in Cambodia’s development is often highlighted by showcasing Angkor Wat and its surrounding temples. However, the pre-Angkorian era laid the groundwork for what became one of the world’s most renowned UNESCO World Heritage Sites, dating back to the 9th century AD. The vast Khmer Kingdom covered over 300 square kilometers, featuring numerous smaller sites that are equally as remarkable as Angkor’s central area. Among these lesser-known temple groups is the Roluos Group, a stunning example of the achievements preceding the construction of Angkor Wat. This makes for an ideal half-day trip that perfectly complements any other tour around Siem Reap.
