- Beng Mealea - Explore the fascinating Beng Mealea temple, a remarkable site outside the Angkor area, built by King Suryavarman II in the 11th century. This temple served as a prototype for the renowned Angkor Wat. Nestled in the jungle, Beng Mealea offers an adventurous journey to its location. It was secluded during Cambodia’s civil war and is the largest temple outside the main Angkor complex. Some parts remain remarkably intact, while others are enveloped by tree roots, creating an eerie yet captivating atmosphere. Beng Mealea shares many features with Angkor Wat, including three encircling galleries, four gates, entrances, and two interior libraries, but it has only one central tower compared to Angkor Wat’s five.
- Ro Lus Market - Visit the local market located on the banks of the Rolous River. Rolous Market is a vital hub where local villagers gather in the morning and late afternoon to buy fresh vegetables, meats, fruits, freshwater fish, and household items. It is the oldest Khmer market in the area and offers a genuine glimpse into the local lifestyle.
- Kampong Phluk - Kampong Phluk is an excellent destination for tourists to explore the flooded mangrove trees and forests. Travel through the countryside to the Tonle Sap fishing village, enjoying scenic views along the way. Visit the local market, school, Buddhist temple, and fishing villages. Tonle Sap, the second-largest freshwater lake in the world, is crucial to the country, providing fish and protein for most Cambodians. A local guide will share insights into the daily lives of those living on land and water. Along the journey, there are opportunities to explore local villages on foot and interact with the residents.
- Kampong Phluk Floating Village - The community primarily relies on fishing, especially shrimp, during Cambodia’s wet season. Many homes and buildings are built on stilts, ranging from 6 to 9 meters, to adapt to the water level changes between wet and dry seasons. During the dry season (November-April), as the river recedes, many residents turn to farming to supplement their income. Tourism, which began in the village about a decade ago, is also becoming an important part of the local economy.
