- Banteay Srei - At around 8:00 AM, guests will be picked up from their hotel to explore the magnificent Banteay Srei Temple.
Banteay Srei, celebrated as Cambodia’s most exquisite pink sandstone temple, is situated approximately 37 kilometers north of Angkor Wat. The name “Banteay Srei” means “Lady Temple,” and its allure is found in its exceptional preservation and compact size, enhanced by intricate decorative details. This temple is a true gem of Khmer art. Due to its delicate and detailed carvings, some locals believe it was crafted by women, which is reflected in its name.
Originally called Isvarapura, Banteay Srei was constructed by King Rajendravarman II in 967 AD and dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple was rediscovered by a Frenchman in 1914, though it wasn’t fully cleared until 1924. The first significant restoration was undertaken by the École Française d’Extrême-Orient (EFEO) in 1923, using a reinstatement method to maintain its beauty.
- Beng Mealea - Following this, the tour will continue to Prasat Beng Mealea, the most famous remote jungle temple in Cambodia. Located about 66 kilometers northeast of Siem Reap, Beng Mealea is a remarkable ruin that blends seamlessly with the surrounding nature, maintaining its original, untouched state. Unaffected by restoration and conservation efforts, it became accessible to visitors in the early 2000s after the area was cleared of landmines.
Beng Mealea was built by King Suriyavarman II and later completed by King Dharanindravarman II. The temple features an intriguing sarcophagus-like urn, reminiscent of the adventurous “Indiana Jones” spirit, surrounded by heaps of fallen stones and dark, mysterious galleries. Visitors will have an enjoyable experience, provided they exercise caution while exploring this captivating site!
- Kompong Khleang - Kompong Khleang is a well-known fishing community that offers visitors a unique chance to interact with local people and experience their lifestyle. “Kompong Khleang” and its community are home to about 6,000 fishing families, totaling around 15,000 residents.
This wetland community undergoes a fascinating transformation during the wet season when all roads are submerged. The houses, elevated above the water, appear to float gracefully on the surface. In contrast, during the dry season, the homes are supported by stilts, resembling wooden skyscrapers—a truly remarkable sight!
Visitors can also embark on a boating trip into the vast waters of the Great Lake, where they can explore beautiful floating houses. Many local fishermen choose to live in these floating homes, as they offer easy mobility for their daily fishing activities. A visit to Kompong Khleang is highly recommended for those seeking an authentic cultural experience!
- Tonle Sap Lake - Tonle Sap Great Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, located in central Cambodia. It plays a vital role in the region’s ecology and economy, supporting rich biodiversity and providing livelihoods for millions. The lake is renowned for its extraordinary seasonal fluctuations, expanding significantly during the monsoon season and contracting in the dry months, creating a unique ecosystem.
Tonle Sap is home to numerous floating villages, where communities live and work on the water, relying on fishing and aquaculture. The lake is also a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, recognized for its importance in sustaining wildlife, including migratory birds and various fish species. Visitors to Tonle Sap can experience its stunning natural beauty, vibrant local culture, and the intricate relationship between the people and their environment.
