- Angkor Thom - Begin the day with a hotel pick-up in Siem Reap around 8am, then proceed to the ticket counter to purchase a temple pass. The adventure commences at the majestic Angkor Thom, the final capital of the illustrious Khmer Empire. Explore the expansive Elephant Terrace, the Terrace of the Leper King, and the captivating Bayon. This 12th-century marvel is located at the heart of Angkor Thom City and is an archaeological spectacle of symmetry and grandeur. The outer gallery walls feature extensive bas-reliefs, but the main attractions are the towers, each adorned with 3 or 4 serene smiling faces, totaling over 200.
Part of the larger Bayon temple complex includes lesser-known temples with fascinating histories; the Phimeanakas Temple within the Royal Palace enclosure, Baphuon Temple, the Terrace of the Elephants, and the Terrace of the Leper King are all part of the complex and are conveniently within walking distance of each other. These sites, rich in history, enhance the enchanting world of Angkor.
- Ta Prohm Temple - The journey continues to Ta Prohm, a favorite among visitors due to its integration with the jungle. Built in the late 12th century by Jayavarman VII as a tribute to his mother, Ta Prohm is a must-see for anyone visiting Siem Reap. While clearing the forest, it was decided to leave the trees in place to reflect how the original discoverers found it and other temples.
- Angkor Wat - The remainder of the afternoon is dedicated to Angkor Wat. Considered the largest religious structure in the world, its stone volume rivals that of the Cheops pyramid in Egypt. Unlike other Khmer temples, it faces west, and its symmetrical towers are depicted on the modern Cambodian flag.
Enjoy the sunset from outside this temple before returning to your hotel around 5:30pm.
