- Bayon Temple - Constructed nearly a century after Angkor Wat, the Bayon Temple’s initial structure and earliest sections remain unknown. Positioned at the heart of a royal city, it likely began as a temple-mountain symbolizing Mount Meru. The temple’s middle section was expanded during a second construction phase, while the current Bayon reflects the third and final phase of its artistic style. The Bayon’s smiling faces, architectural scale, and composition radiate grandeur, with over 200 large faces carved on 54 towers, giving the temple its majestic character.

Baphuon Temple
Baphuon stands on a rectangular sandstone base with five levels of similar size, unlike the typical design of progressively smaller levels. The first three levels are encircled by sandstone galleries. Baphuon is the first structure to feature stone galleries with a central tower. Two cross-shaped libraries with four porches are located in the courtyard, originally linked by an elevated walkway supported by columns.
- Phimeanakas - Phimeanakas Temple is located near the center of the Royal Palace’s enclosed area. It was once topped with a golden pinnacle, as Zhou Daguan described it as the Tower of Gold. The temple is constructed from roughly hewn sandstone blocks and features minimal decoration.

Terrace of the Elephants
Elephants, ridden by servants and princes, move as quietly as if on a leisurely stroll. The evenly spaced steps disregard any obstacles. The forest they traverse is impenetrable to all but the smallest creatures, which can slip through the undergrowth, and the largest animals, which create paths through the virgin vegetation.
- Terrace of the Leper King - The Terrace of the Leper King continues the grandeur theme characteristic of Jayavarman VII’s reign. It features dramatic bas-reliefs on both the interior and exterior. During clearing, the EFEO discovered a second wall with bas-reliefs similar to those on the outer wall. Some archaeologists believe this second wall indicates a late rite, faced with sandstone. It collapsed, and a second wall was built in front of it without clearing the rubble. Recently, the EFEO created a false corridor allowing visitors to view the reliefs on the first wall.
- Ta Nei Temple - Ta Nei is a late 12th-century stone temple in Angkor, Cambodia. Built during King Jayavarman VII’s reign, it is near the northwest corner of the East Baray, a large sacred reservoir. It was dedicated to the Buddha.
- Ta Prohm - Ta Prohm is the undisputed capital of the kingdom of the Trees. It remains largely untouched by archaeologists, except for a visitor path and structural reinforcements to prevent further decay. Its natural state allows visitors to experience the wonder felt by early explorers who discovered these monuments in the mid-19th century. Enveloped in dense jungle, Ta Prohm exudes an ethereal and romantic aura. Fig, banyan, and kapok trees spread their massive roots over stones, prying walls and terraces apart, while their branches and leaves form a canopy over the structures. Tree trunks twist among stone pillars, and the site’s mysterious charm captivates visitors as thoroughly as the roots entwine the walls and towers.

Angkor Wat
Angkor Wat, the largest and best-preserved monument of the Angkor group, is an architectural masterpiece. Its flawless composition, balance, proportions, reliefs, and sculptures make it one of the world’s finest monuments. It is widely believed that Angkor Wat served as a funerary temple for King Suryavarman II, oriented westward to symbolize the connection between the setting sun and death. The bas-reliefs, designed for viewing from left to right in accordance with Hindu funerary rituals, support this purpose.
