Discover the 1000 Lingas: Phnom Kulen’s Symbolic Significance as the Birthplace of the Ancient Khmer Empire
Phnom Kulen National Park - Explore the 1000 lingas carvings and waterfall. Phnom Kulen holds great symbolic importance for Cambodia as the birthplace of the ancient Khmer Empire. It was here that King Jayavarman II declared independence from Java in 804 CE. Jayavarman II established the Devaraja cult of the king, a linga cult, marking 804 CE as the year of independence from Java, to which the Khmer had been a vassal state. (There is debate over whether this “Java” refers to the Khmer term “chvea” used for Champa, or “Lava” (a Lao kingdom), as well as the legend of his earlier captivity in Java. Refer to Higham’s The Civilization of Angkor for more details.)
