Angkor Wat, meaning “City/Capital of Temples,” is a Buddhist temple complex in Cambodia and stands as the largest religious monument globally, covering an area of 162.6 hectares (1,626,000 m2; 402 acres). Initially built as a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Vishnu for the Khmer Empire, it was gradually converted into a Buddhist temple by the late 12th century. Constructed by the Khmer King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century in Yaśodharapura (Khmer: យសោធរបុរៈ, now known as Angkor), the capital of the Khmer Empire, it served as his state temple and eventual mausoleum. Unlike previous kings who followed the Shaiva tradition, Angkor Wat was dedicated to Vishnu.
- Beng Mealea - Originally constructed as a Hindu temple, Beng Mealea features carvings that also depict Buddhist motifs. Built primarily from sandstone, it remains largely unrestored, with trees and dense brush flourishing among its towers and courtyards, and many stones lying in large heaps. Although it was once difficult to access, a newly constructed road to the temple complex of Koh Ker now passes Beng Mealea, attracting more visitors as it is located 77 km from Siem Reap by road.

The history of Beng Mealea is not well-documented, but its architectural style, identical to Angkor Wat, suggests it was built during King Suryavarman II’s reign in the early 12th century. Although smaller than Angkor Wat, the king’s primary monument, Beng Mealea is still among the larger temples of the Khmer Empire. The gallery forming the temple’s outer enclosure measures 181 m by 152 m. It was the center of a town, encircled by a moat measuring 1025 m by 875 m and 45 m wide.
