• Angkor Wat - After the flight, embark on an overland tour of Angkor Wat, constructed between 1113-1150 AD and dedicated to Vishnu, the Hindu god of preservation. It is the best-preserved temple, with a layout and scale that are truly awe-inspiring. The surrounding wall measures 1,000 by 800 meters, and the moat, symbolizing the world’s oceans, is 200 meters wide. Angkor Wat is an architectural representation of the mythical Mount Meru at the world’s center (Himalaya). This remarkable temple houses the world’s longest continuous bas-relief, which adorns the outer gallery walls.
• Angkor Thom - Explore the Angkor Thom complex, enclosed by vast walls measuring 6m wide, 8m high, and 13km long, containing numerous monuments. Within the walls resided the king, his relatives, officials, military officers, and priests, while others lived outside the great enclosure, between two artificial lakes. The visit begins at the South Gate, a stunning introduction to Angkor Thom, featuring well-restored statues of Asuras (demons) and gods lining the bridge. Inside, visit the Bayon with its 200 endlessly smiling faces. This temple mountain, located at the center of Angkor Thom City, distinguishes the Bayon from other Angkor monuments. Continue to the Elephant Terrace, named for its remarkable depiction of elephants, and the Terrace of the Leper King, showcasing a magnificent sculpture known as the leper king.
• Ta Prohm Temple - Continue the tour to Ta Prohm, a monastery built by King Jayavarman VII as a residence for his mother and a school. French archaeologists have controversially left Ta Prohm to the jungle’s destructive power to illustrate nature’s incredible force. The temple is largely engulfed by the jungle, with giant trees growing from the temple’s top. As you navigate the crumbling stone structures, you might expect to see Indiana Jones (Lara Croft) emerge from behind a fallen pillar.
