- Battambang - As Cambodia’s second-largest city and the capital of Battambang Province, Battambang was established in the 11th century. It was once the capital of Monton Khmer and is centrally located in the Northwest of Cambodia. Before the war years, which saw the destruction of much of its infrastructure, it was the country’s leading rice-producing province.
- Bamboo Train Battambang - The bamboo train offers one of the world’s most iconic rail experiences. Starting from O Dambong, 3.7km south of Battambang’s Old Stone Bridge on the east bank, the train travels southeast to O Sra Lav. The journey takes about half an hour, featuring the rhythmic sounds of the train on warped, misaligned rails and crossing bridges left by the French. Each bamboo train, known in Khmer as a norry (nori), consists of a 3m-long wooden frame covered with ultra-light bamboo slats, resting on two barbell-like bogies, with the rear one connected by fan belts to a 6HP gasoline engine. It can carry 10 to 15 people or up to three tons of rice, cruising at approximately 25km/h. The system’s brilliance lies in its solution to the single-track line dilemma: when two trains meet, one is quickly disassembled and set aside to let the other pass.
- Royal Residence Battambang - The Royal Bungalow within the Provincial Residence compound was constructed in the 1960s by renowned Cambodian architect Vann Molyvann. Its design is a blend of traditional Khmer architecture and modern elements, known as “New Khmer Architecture.” It serves as accommodation for the Royal Family during their visits to Battambang. His Majesty, King of Cambodia Norodom Sihamoni, last visited in 2007.
- Damrey Sor Pagoda - Damrey Sor Pagoda, also known as the White Elephant Pagoda, is a popular tourist attraction located in the city center of Battambang. This renowned temple is situated in a bustling district, making it easily accessible and a prime attraction in Battambang. Wat Tahm-rai-saw (White Elephant Pagoda) is celebrated for its intricate architectural design. Visitors can reach this destination via Road 2 or Road 3, with Road 2 being busier. Along these roads, there are roadside shops and eateries. Being close to the city center, there are numerous hotels and lodging options, making it convenient for tourists to visit the temple.
- Battambang Central Market - Battambang city, the provincial capital of Battambang Province in western Cambodia, is renowned for its well-preserved French colonial architecture, its thriving creative scene, and its abundant rice production.
- Cambodia Peace Gallery (Cambodia Peace Museum) - Optional Tour: Open from Monday to Saturday, closed on Sunday. Visitors can purchase tickets on-site for this optional tour. The Cambodia Peace Gallery is a place for reflection and learning about Cambodia’s journey from war to peace and reconciliation. It presents the complex history of Cambodia, marked by structural violence from past atrocities, while celebrating the efforts of Cambodian peacebuilders.
- Banan Temple - ភ្នំបាណន់ - Phnom Banan is the best-preserved Khmer temple in Battambang Province. Its distinctive five towers resemble the larger and more famous temple in Battambang. At the mountain’s base is a laterite staircase flanked by Nagas.
- Phnom Sampow - At the summit of Sam Puoy mountain, there is a temple and three natural wells named Pkar Slar, Lo Khuon, and Ak So Pheak. Adjacent to Sam Puoy mountain are several main mountains, including natural sites like Phnom Trung Moan, Phnom Trung Tea, and Phnom Neang Rum Say Sork. These mountains are linked to the Cambodian folk legend of Reach Kol Neang Rum Say Sork.
- Pkar Slar Cave - Pkar Slar cave is small but has a unique atmosphere due to the Buddhist shrine inside. During exploration, visitors are treated to a charming scene.
- The Killing Cave - The killing caves of Phnom Sampeau are a Khmer Rouge execution site located on a hill southwest of Battambang in western Cambodia. Victims were executed at the top of the cave and their bodies were thrown into the cave. Men and women were placed in separate caves, with clothes in another. Several caves at Phnom Sampeau have traditionally served as Buddhist temples. Today, a large glass memorial stands in the cave next to the skulls and bones, along with a golden reclining Buddha accessible via a staircase. A memorial made from cyclone fencing and chicken wire contains human bones at the base of the stairway.
- Battambang Bat Caves - Witness a spectacular sight at the foot of Battambang’s Phnom Sampeou as the sun sets and millions of bats emerge from the caves, soaring into the sky. Here’s everything you need to know about Cambodia’s bat caves.
