Experience the perfect blend of culture and cuisine in Koto City this Golden Week. With pleasant weather and a lineup of engaging activities, immerse yourself in the vibrant markets, serene gardens, and captivating museums that define this unique Tokyo district.

Morning Mystique: The Tuna Auction and Tsukiji Food Tour

As the sun begins to rise over Koto City, the air is filled with anticipation and the promise of a day rich in cultural and culinary exploration. The perfect start to your Golden Week getaway is the Toyosu and Tsukiji Tour, where the early morning hours are dedicated to the exhilarating experience of the tuna auction at Toyosu Market. This is not just a market visit; it’s a deep dive into the heart of Japanese culinary culture. From the public observation deck, you can witness the frenetic energy of the auction, a spectacle that draws chefs and food enthusiasts from around the world.

The tour continues through the bustling Tsukiji Fish Market, a maze of seafood wonders where the freshest ingredients are sourced daily. As you wander past stalls brimming with sea urchins and puffer fish, the guide shares insights into the market’s storied history. This is a walking tour, so be prepared for a morning of sensory delights and cultural immersion. As one reviewer noted on January 1, 2025:

Great Tsukiji & Toyosu Fish Market Auction Experience with Naoko - We had Naoko as our amazing guide! Girly is young & well knowledge about both the Inner & Outer Fish Market at Toyosu is the inner market she will explain and bring you around to see the Morning Bluefin & Tuna auction happening, as well as, the history of the market within the area where smaller private markets are happening which you can see from the third-floor observation area. She also brought us around Toyosu Outer Market where you can buy certain seafood products, as well as, local stalls that sell snacks & food for you to eat like a traditional wet market! Sis can speak English quite well & can recommend nearby places to visit like the Hamarikyu Garden where you can drink traditional Matcha tea & treats after visiting the market for a peaceful time! Thank you, Naoko! 🥰😁

Afternoon Serenity: Imperial Palace and Kiyosumi Garden

After a morning filled with the vibrant energy of the markets, the afternoon offers a serene contrast with a visit to the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace. This is a place where history and nature intertwine, offering a peaceful retreat amidst the relics of the Edo Castle. The gardens are a testament to Japan’s rich history, with stone walls and moats that whisper stories of the past. As you stroll through the gardens, take a moment to appreciate the seasonal flowers that add a splash of color to the lush greenery.

Following this, the Imperial Palace and Kiyosumi Tour takes you to the Kiyosumi Garden, a hidden gem known for its unique collection of stones gathered from all over Japan. This garden, once owned by the founder of Mitsubishi, is a place of scenic beauty and tranquility. It’s the perfect spot to reflect on the morning’s adventures and prepare for the cultural experiences that await in the Ryogoku area.

Evening Elegance: Ukiyo-e Museum and Culinary Delights

As the day transitions into evening, the cultural journey continues in the Ryogoku area, famous for its Sumo stadium and a plethora of museums. The Sumida Hokusai Ukiyo-e Museum is a must-visit for art enthusiasts, offering a glimpse into the world of traditional Japanese woodblock prints. The museum’s collection is a tribute to Hokusai’s energetic and enthusiastic life, showcasing the beauty and intricacy of Ukiyo-e art.

After immersing yourself in the artistic heritage of Japan, it’s time to indulge in the culinary delights that Koto City has to offer. Whether you choose to dine at a local sushi restaurant or explore the vibrant food scene, the evening promises a feast for the senses. The combination of cultural exploration and culinary indulgence makes for a perfect end to a day of discovery in Koto City.

With the weather being pleasantly mild and the skies mostly clear, this Golden Week getaway offers the ideal conditions for exploring the cultural and culinary treasures of Koto City. From the bustling markets to the serene gardens and captivating museums, every moment is an opportunity to connect with the rich traditions and vibrant culture of Japan.
