• Koblenz - Koblenz, one of Germany’s oldest cities, offers visitors a wealth of cultural monuments and historic architecture. Begin your walking tour at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers, where a long strip of land juts into the water like a ship’s bow. This historic site, known as Deutsches Eck (German Corner), was named after the establishment of the Knights of the Teutonic Order in the 13th century. Be awed by the towering equestrian statue of German Emperor Wilhelm I and enjoy the stunning view of the 19th-century Fortress Ehrenbreitstein, perched 118 meters above the Rhine on the right bank.

Nearby, visit the Basilica of St. Castor, founded in 836 AD and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Next, head to Görresplatz, once the heart of the Roman settlement and later owned by the St. Castor Monastery during the Middle Ages, before passing to the Jesuit order.

This leads to Jesuitenplatz, or Jesuit Square, where the Jesuit order resided from the 16th to the 18th century, succeeding a 13th-century Cistercian nuns’ convent school. Admire the palace-like Jesuit school, its towers, and magnificent porches. Since 1895, this square has housed the city hall (Rathausgebäude I).

Continue to the heart of Koblenz, the old town center, lovingly restored after WWII. Here, you will also find the Church of Our Dear Lady, or Liebfrauenkirche, built on the city’s highest point. From the late Middle Ages until the secularization following the French Revolution and Napoleonic War, it served as Koblenz’s main parish church. Destroyed during World War II, it was reconstructed in 1955. Its onion domes are symbolic of Koblenz’s old town.

St. Florin’s Market, once the city’s political and commercial hub, is named after St. Florin’s Church (Florinskirche). This church, along with the 15th-century “Kauf und Danzhaus,” Schöffenhaus, and Bürresheimer Hof, are among the city’s most beautiful buildings.

Next, visit Münzplatz, named after the former electoral mint, or “Münze” in German. Starting in the 11th century, coins of the Electorate of Trier were minted in Koblenz. Originally comprising several buildings, the mint was demolished in the 19th century to create today’s square, leaving only the Münzmeisterhaus, a baroque building with a simple plaster facade.

Now, head to the memorial site of the Four Towers, four historical buildings constructed in 1608 and rebuilt twice, once in the 17th century and again after World War II. The four buildings share the same facade, hence the name. In the corner of the house “Zum grünen Baum” (The Green Tree), a new passage was built in the 1950s to allow access from the pedestrian area. The house “Zum heiligen Petrus” (Holy Peter’s) housed a pharmacy from 1730 until the mid-2000s. The house with the plants is the only one to have survived the bombings of Koblenz almost unscathed. The fourth building, called “Hauptwache,” is a reminder of soldiers who took over police duties in this building until 1848.

From here, return to the city center, near the Church of Our Lady, to conclude the tour in a central location for better orientation.
