Embracing the Rain: Kitulgala’s Indoor Wonders
Nestled in the heart of Sri Lanka’s Central Province, Kitulgala is a haven for those seeking a blend of adventure and tranquility. As the rain gently taps on the lush canopy above, the town transforms into a mystical retreat, inviting travelers to explore its hidden gems. The weather forecast for May 17th and 18th promises overcast skies and a high likelihood of rain, making it the perfect time to delve into Kitulgala’s indoor adventures.
One of the most captivating experiences awaits at the Belilena Cave Tour on May 18th. This private 9-hour tour offers a journey through time, as you trek through the verdant jungles surrounding Kitulgala to discover the ancient Belilena Caves. These limestone caves, nestled in the picturesque foothills, hold archaeological significance with fossils and skeletal remains dating back over 10,000 years. The serene ambiance of the caves, coupled with the sound of rain, creates a meditative atmosphere that transports visitors to another era. A recent review from July 31, 2023, captures the essence of this experience:
“Through Tea estates and Rubber plantations and finally a Waterfall !!!! - The BELILENA Caves were home to the BELIGONDA man. Occupied by Prehistoric homosapiens 35,000 years ago, these caves carry a lot of history. The walk to the caves is very pleasant and fun. Winding through Tea estates and runner plantations one can spot a wide variety of birds and spiders and flowers. Lots of mini waterfalls en-route. The caves itself are hidden behind a wide waterfall – almost feels like a surreal set from the PHANTOM comics!!!!! The taxi will drop you off at the edge of the Katilgala Jungle. You have the option of taking a ‘Tuk-Tuk’. The Tuk-Tuk will take you to the border of the estate, beyond which you have to trek on foot. We opted to WALK throughout and politely refused the Tuk-Tuk that had been arranged. We enjoyed the long walk. When we ran out of water, we simply filled our bottles from the clear jungle stream flowing along the path!!!! My suggestion – It’s perfect for those who love to explore the greenery.” (Reviewed at: 2023-07-31)
