Located on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, the significant town of Kigoma is bordered by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi, and Zambia. This town was one of the earliest settlements before the colonial era due to its strategic location. Known as Kigoma/Ujiji, it is among the oldest towns in East Africa, alongside Lamu, Mombasa, Kilwa, Bagamoyo, and Zanzibar. Kigoma was a key hub for trade and the slave trade.
During this excursion, visitors will explore one of Lake Tanganyika’s oldest ports, Kigoma Port. They will have the opportunity to see the Mv. Liemba, a historic German ship, which is one of the oldest ships still in existence. The tour includes a visit to the Kigoma Railway Station, constructed in 1913 by Germany to complete the extensive central railway that remains operational today. The journey continues to the Kigoma Roman Catholic Church, followed by a visit to the Dr. Livingstone Memorial Museum, renowned for the Henry Stanley Molton quote “I suppose.”
