Day 2: Explore Siem Reap
Angkor Wat - 8:00 AM: The guide will pick you up from the hotel. Begin temple sightseeing with a tuk-tuk.
- Angkor Wat: The largest temple in the world, it was the last capital and the most powerful city of the Khmer Empire. Located in Siem Reap Province, Cambodia, it was founded in the late 12th century by Jayavarman VII and spans an area of 9 square kilometers. A deeply spiritual place.
Ta Prohm - Ta Prohm: Known as the “Tomb Raider Temple,” it features giant roots growing over corridors. The photogenic and atmospheric blend of trees growing out of the ruins and the jungle surroundings make it one of Angkor’s most popular temples with visitors.
Bayon Temple - Bayon: Known for its giant smiling faces. The mystery surrounding the temple’s name adds to the enigmatic face-towers that define its architecture. Since its rediscovery by French scholars and explorers in the 19th century, the identity of the smiling figures that greet visitors to the temple and Angkor Thom has been debated. Do they depict Buddhist or Hindu deities, or do they represent King Jayavarman VII smiling over his empire? Inscriptions from the temple, along with its name, could help us understand the identity of the four-faced figures.
Angkor Thom - Enjoy the detailed faces on the South gate of Angkor Thom. Scholars have speculated that the monumental faces at the entrance gates of Angkor Thom and Bayon represent the Mahayana bodhisattva, Avalokiteshvara; the Tantric Buddha Vajrasattva; or the Hindu deities, Brahma and Shiva, among others.
The face-towers typically have four faces, each facing the cardinal directions; although, some towers at Bayon have three faces. The faces are uniform in style, with broad smiles and open eyes. The figure wears an intricate filet-style crown, and his elongated earlobes are adorned with inverted lotus jeweled earrings. There is no identifying iconography such as the Buddha’s cranial protuberance or Shiva’s third eye.
- Lunch Break: Inside Archaeological Park Restaurant
Wat Thmey (Killing Fields) - Visit the grounds of the Wat Thmey killing fields, now a temple site. Here, you will see a large stupa memorial with glass sides, filled with the skulls and bones of those who died during the Khmer Rouge. These have been carefully gathered by local residents in memory of their families and friends. Today, Wat Thmey serves as a Buddhist monastery and a memorial site visited by tourists. More than just a historical site, many come to Wat Thmey Temple to pay homage and remember those who lost their lives in the Cambodian Killing Fields. While walking around this site, you will see the museum, exhibits, and the infamous well.
Artisans d’Angkor - Artisans d’Angkor: A school for underprivileged individuals from the countryside to learn how to make handicrafts. Artisans Angkor was established in 1999 to help young people find work in their home villages, allowing them to practice their crafts while providing them with a vocation. It was created as part of a three-year project to integrate young artisans trained by the Chantiers-Ecoles de Formation Professionnelle, whose objective is to revive traditional craft skills (stone carving, wood carving, lacquering, gilding, and silk processing). Emphasis is placed on the authenticity of its products to Khmer culture. Over 1,000 jobs have been created for both artisans (657) and non-craftsmen in rural Cambodia by investing in new apprenticeships and skills creation through continuous training and setting up new village workshops.
In the evening, enjoy free time exploring Angkor Night Life.
