The Sundarbans, meaning “Beautiful Forest” in English, is the largest mangrove region located in the delta formed by the merging of the Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Meghna Rivers in the Bay of Bengal. It stretches from the Hooghly River in West Bengal, India, to the Baleswar River in Bangladesh. Four protected areas within the Sundarbans are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Sundarbans National Park, Sundarbans West, Sundarbans South, and Sundarbans East Wildlife Sanctuaries.
The Sundarbans mangrove forest spans approximately 10,000 km² (3,900 sq mi) and provides a habitat for 453 wildlife species, including 290 bird species, 120 fish species, 42 mammal species, 35 reptile species, and eight amphibian species.
Despite a complete ban on the killing or capturing of wildlife, except for fish and some invertebrates, there has been a noticeable decline in biodiversity and species loss throughout the 20th century. The Sundarbans is renowned as the home of the world-famous Royal Bengal Tiger.
