- Iron Mountain Road - Norbeck Overlook, hand-carved stone tunnels, and spiral pigtail bridges stand as the defining engineering and artistic achievements of Iron Mountain Road. Designed in the 1930s by Senator Peter Norbeck, this scenic highway was carefully crafted to slow travelers to 20 mph, allowing them to fully absorb the pristine Ponderosa pine landscape.
The route features three remarkably narrow, single-lane tunnels blasted directly through the solid granite mountainside. As each one is exited, Mount Rushmore beautifully comes into view, framed perfectly through the center of the tunnel openings.
To manage the mountain’s steep elevation changes, engineers designed a series of three pigtail bridges. These architectural wonders are wooden spiral structures that corkscrew upward, looping the highway entirely over itself. Built with native timber, they provide an incredibly smooth transition over steep grades and offer a playful, roller-coaster-like driving experience.

Crazy Horse Memorial - Deep in the sacred Black Hills of South Dakota, the Crazy Horse Memorial rises as a monumental tribute to Indigenous spirit and resilience. Carved from privately held mountain land, this colossal masterpiece honors the legendary Oglala Lakota warrior Crazy Horse, captured mid-ride as he points toward his ancestral lands. Upon its completion, it is slated to become the largest man-made sculpture in the world.
Beyond the jaw-dropping scale of the mountain itself, the site serves as a vibrant, living cultural hub. Visitors can explore an expansive on-site museum that proudly protects and showcases over 14,000 authentic pieces of Native American art and historical artifacts. The experience truly comes alive during the summer months when talented Lakota dancers perform powerful, traditional dances on the outdoor patio, sharing their living heritage. Combining breathtaking artistry, deep history, and active storytelling, it is a profoundly moving educational and cultural experience.
