- Florida Keys - With audio guides providing commentary based on GPS location, travelers can tailor their own itinerary along the tour routes to suit their interests and schedule.
Alternatively, trip planners offer suggestions for half, full, or multi-day itineraries.
Here are some of the many highlights:
- Bahia Honda State Park - Known as the best beach in the Florida Keys, Bahia Honda State Park is also ranked among the top 10 beaches in the USA.
On a warm day, it’s a perfect spot for a refreshing swim or simply to enjoy the sand and water.
- Anne’s Beach - Located on Lower Matecumbe Key, Anne’s Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Keys.
A 300-foot newly replaced boardwalk provides access to various parts of the beach, where the water is typically warm, clear, and calm.
Even if swimming isn’t on the agenda, it’s a great place for a photo.
- The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum - Situated in the heart of Old Town Key West, the Ernest Hemingway House and Museum was home to the iconic American author for a decade. Visitors can tour the house and gardens to learn about his books, four wives, children, and see the 40 polydactyl cats descended from his famous six-toed cat, Snow White.
- National Key Deer Refuge - The endangered Key Deer, found only in the Florida Keys, are excellent swimmers, which may have helped them survive hurricanes like Irma. Today, vehicle collisions pose the greatest threat, so slow driving zones are in place to protect them, especially around Big Pine Key.
- Key West - Once the largest city in Florida, Key West is a vibrant town just 90 miles from Cuba, located on major shipping routes from South America. It offers a unique blend of American, Cuban, and Latino cultures.
The architecture is stylish, the streets are lively, and there are numerous recommended places to visit on this compact island.
- John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park - As the first undersea park in the US, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park preserves not only land but also marine environments.
Spanning about 70 nautical square miles, it features mangrove swamps, shallow-water coral, and deep-sea reefs, making it ideal for scuba diving.
Visitors can snorkel among a variety of fish while exploring the Christ of the Deep Statue and remnants of an old Spanish shipwreck.
- Pigeon Key - This small 5-acre island played a crucial role for railroad workers constructing the final stages of the Florida East Coast Railway’s Overseas Railway project, connecting passengers from New York to Key West and even continuing by boat to Havana without leaving the carriage.
The Old Seven Mile Bridge passed through the island, serving as homes and a camp for workers. After Hurricane Irma, bridge reconstruction continues for those wishing to walk to Pigeon Key again.
Currently, access is via a short ferry ride from the visitor center in Marathon, which is an added bonus.
- Seven Mile Bridge - As the longest bridge on the Overseas Highway, Seven Mile Bridge offers the sensation of floating over water. It’s an interesting photo stop, especially from the Marathon side, with views of the historically significant Pigeon Key as you drive by.
- Old Seven Mile Bridge - Recently reopened for walking, biking, and fishing.
- The Turtle Hospital - The world’s first dedicated Turtle Hospital was established in Marathon by converting an old motel.
Turtles rescued from boat collisions, plastic bags, and other hazards are treated here and, in most cases, released back into the ocean.
- Key Largo - The longest of the Florida Keys and the first Key encountered when leaving the USA mainland.
Three popular stops on Key Largo include the Caribbean Club, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, and the African Queen.
Two of these locations have inspired Hollywood.
Divers and snorkelers will find many fascinating features to explore in the clear, warm waters.
