Setting Sail on a Windy Day

The Florida Keys have always been a siren call for me, with their promise of vibrant marine life and the allure of the open sea. So, when I found myself in Key Largo, I couldn’t resist the temptation to hop aboard the Florida Keys Snorkel Adventure and explore the underwater wonders. The day was a bit windy, but that only added to the thrill of the adventure.

As I approached the Amoray Dive Resort, the laid-back vibe was palpable. Palm trees swayed gently, and the tiki huts whispered promises of relaxation. The crew was already bustling about, having returned from a morning trip. They informed us that the conditions were a bit rougher than anticipated, and some morning snorkelers had felt the sea’s wrath. But the crew’s transparency and professionalism were commendable. They offered refunds to those who wished to cancel, and a family of five decided to sit this one out. For me, the prospect of navigating the Grecian Rocks, known for their resilience against windy conditions, was too enticing to pass up.

Diving into the Blue

Once aboard the 45-foot catamaran, the excitement was palpable. The boat was spacious, with plenty of seating and shade, perfect for a half-day adventure. As we set sail, the crew briefed us on safety measures and the best snorkeling spots. The Grecian Rocks were bustling with dive boats, a testament to their popularity even on a windy day.

The waves danced around us, about three feet high, but the catamaran handled them with grace. As a former surfer, the rhythm of the sea felt like a familiar dance. The crew was attentive, offering life jackets and noodles for those who needed them. With snorkel gear in hand, I plunged into the azure waters, eager to explore the vibrant coral reefs and the myriad of fish that called them home.

A World Beneath the Waves

The coral itself was in good shape, a testament to the care taken to preserve this marine sanctuary. The crew had pointed us in the right direction, ensuring we had the best experience possible.

Despite the wind, the snorkeling was a success. A few fellow snorkelers felt a bit queasy, but the crew was quick to assist, ensuring everyone was comfortable. As I floated above the reef, I couldn’t help but feel a deep connection to the ocean, a reminder of why I chose this life of adventure and exploration. The snacks and ice-cold water provided a refreshing break, and as we sailed back to the resort, I knew I’d return to try my luck at the elusive Elbow Reef. Until then, the memories of the Grecian Rocks would tide me over.
