Exceptional fishing with extra perks of border collies for company - We requested a fishing charter with Captain Steve, since he has 2 beautiful border collies who would be joining us on the fishing charter. This made our experience exceptional for my two grandchildren, in addition to all of the rockfish that they caught.

Fishing fun with David Smithers! - Although we didn’t catch an over abundance of fish, we had a great time. Our guide, David Smithers was really good explaining what we were looking for and telling us all about the area and its people!!

Great day of Fishing - Had a great day of fishing. Raven did a great job. The only thing we were disappointed in was the Gateway Seafood and Smokehouse that processed our fish and sent it home. They shortchanged us severely

An Amazing Fishing Charter! - My family and I had a wonderful experience with Captain Ryan Hadfield. This was our first fishing charter and we didn’t really know what to expect. Ryan was extremely professional and shared his expertise with us. We were fortunate to have him as our captain and he helped us catch a lot of silver and pink salmon and rockfish. We even got a lingcod but had to put it back because it was 1 inch too small. We would absolutely recommend Ryan and Baranof Fishing Excursions and hope to return another time!

- My wife and I are not fisherman but we enjoy fishing together, with a guide. We were on a cruise and this was an option and we took it. We were met at the cruise-port and rode in their bus to downtown Ketchikan. We met our guide Dennis and he obtained our fishing licenses. We then met another couple (Branof tries to keep it to 4 people a boat) and we went out. We rode for about 20 minutes to a deep hole and Dennis gave us our instructions and we had a perfect day of fishing. We boated 3 halibuts and several Cod as well as a couple rockfish and both couples ended up shipping fish home. We also caught and released 3 sharks and 2 rays. Dennis was magnificent guide and in addition to helping us catch fish, told us a lot about the industry, sustainability and the local economy. He was fascinating and couldn’t have been nicer or more forgiving. I cannot recommend this organization enough for a beautiful fishing adventure in Alaska! Michael Becker St. Louis, Missouri

- Our experience was horrible!!!!!! We read all of the wonderful reviews before booking our fishing excursion. The reviews made this excursion sound exactly what we were looking for. We booked well in advance and were very much looking forward to what would most likely be a once in a lifetime fishing excursion in Alaska. Everything went well until we met our captain for the day, Zane. He was very unfriendly from the start. He didn't introduce himself, just confirmed our identities and started walking, we followed. He got our gear and helped us gear up. He was expressionless and explained very little to us. He walked to the boat, we followed. He stepped onto the boat and started moving things around. We had to ask if it was ok for us to go ahead and board because he was extremely uncommunicative. The boat ride to the fishing spot was fast and rough. The driver's seat had springs, however where we sat did not. We were being thrown around the back of the boat as Zane crashed into each wave at top speed. When we finally got to our fishing spot, Zane started baiting hooks and dropping lines. He spoke no words to us until he had both our lines in the water then he explained how to operate the reels. We tried several times to ask questions, but we could tell by the short responses and the look on his face that he thought our questions were dumb. We caught our limit of halibut and Zane moved on to beginning the process to begin trolling for salmon. Zane expertly set things up, however I had lots of questions since I had never fished like this. His responses were short and not very helpful at all. When a salmon would hit our line he would hand us the pole. The first one was very hard to reel in, and I was struggling. However, instead of being helpful and explaining how to do it better, Zane seemed angry at me, he physically jerked my shoulder around, jammed the fishing rod into my leg, saying "hold it right there" and yelled at me over and over again "reel, reel, reel". I was reeling the best I could but when I lost the salmon you could tell he angry and he with disgust in his voice you have to reel or you will lose them all!!" I just wanted the excursion to be over at this point, but we were miles from shore. We continued to troll and caught salmon but also lost some as we were reeling them in. My husband who is an excellent fisherman lost one just as Zane was reaching down with the net to grab it. Zane was so angry that we lost it. My husband kept asking, what did I do wrong, why is he so mad? We wondered if maybe his pay was somehow based on how many fish we caught. Needless to say, we were so happy when the excursion was finally over, and we were off the boat. We just wanted to get the heck out of there, but Zane just kept hanging around, talking to us for the first time the entire day. He was being very friendly, chatting about the fish we caught, etc. We could tell he was just waiting for his tip. I believe this fishing excursion is meant to give the customers the best chance at reeling in fish while they do the actual fishing. Zane is probably a great fisherman, however he should never work with people! He is unfriendly, impatient, easily angered, uncommunicative, unhelpful and it seems he hates tourists.
