- Tsavo National Park East - Witnessing the dust-red elephants as they wallow, roll, and spray each other with the deep blue waters of the palm-shaded Galana River is one of Africa’s most captivating sights. This, combined with the 300-kilometer-long Yatta Plateau, the world’s longest lava flow, offers a unique adventure in Tsavo East National Park. The park is Kenya’s largest protected area and hosts a variety of large mammals, including vast herds of dust-red elephants, rhinos, buffaloes, lions, leopards, hippos, crocodiles, waterbucks, lesser kudu, gerenuk, and an abundant birdlife with 500 recorded species.
- Aruba Dam - Tsavo East is home to the renowned Big 5. Other notable species include the black rhino, hirola antelope, mongoose, giraffe, bat-eared fox, hyrax, Grevy’s zebra, ground pangolin, Sykes’s monkey, black-faced vervet monkey, and dik-dik, among others. Over 500 bird species have been documented in the area, such as ostrich, kestrel, starling, weaver bird, kingfisher, buzzard, hornbill, secretary bird, and heron. Tsavo lions are famously known for their lack of manes, even the males, which historically led to many being hunted. Although hunting has been banned in Kenya for many years, the proximity of Kenyan villages to game reserves necessitates careful management of human-wildlife conflict.
