Captain Terry did a great job with both the classroom instructions and also on the water. I learned a lot from of the class. Reading the training material before the class was very important to get the best experience.

I would highly recommend South Coast Sailing to anyone wanting to learn how to sail. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and capable of transferring their knowledge to you. I owned a powerboat for over 30 years, but I have never sailed. Upon registration, you are mailed a 126 page book with a lot of nautical terms and sailing techniques. Study the information in the book prior to attending the class, because the classroom portion of the course is only a 1/2 of a day. Anyone can read a book and pass a written test. For the second 1/2 day, you are taken on a sailboat and taught by doing - doing over and over until you are confident that you did it right. My instructor was extremely patient with all of us on the boat. Learning was actually fun for a change. By the end of the day, he would bark out a command, and we worked fluently as a team to execute the command. Day 2 formally tested your skills. I was amazed at how I went from being so confused on the first day to being completely confident for my practical exam on the second day. As far as the written exam, every topic was covered either by the classroom or by performing the task on the boat. I don't feel confident enough to solo-sail from Houston to Fiji, but I do feel that I can skipper a 26' sailboat on a lake or bay. I can't wait to take the next step of ASA 103/104 to get bigger and reach farther. For all of you motorboaters, my biggest adjustment was to think of wind direction first and compass bearing second. Everything is about the wind direction.

I came in knowing very little about sailing and controlling a boat. I left feeling confident enough to helm a boat with a knowledgeable skipper. Kudos to John Brian our instructor; and the whole South Coast Sailing team. Very efficiently run making it a fun, positive experience.

Both of the instructors are very knowledgeable on the subject and did excellent job of passing the knowledge on, Captain Murat in the class room and Captain Tony on the water.
