- Russian Fort Elizabeth State Historical Park - Explore this once-majestic fort, featuring walls that are 20 feet high and 17 feet wide, designed in a star shape.
- Waimea - In Waimea Town, there are several local spots for shopping and dining.
Stop by for a quick snack on the road, but it’s recommended to save a more thorough visit for your return trip. Rest assured, guidance will be provided on the way back!
- Red Dirt Waterfall - While Hawaii is known for its waterfalls, this one stands out for its uniqueness.
It flows through Kauai’s red dirt rather than the typical lush green jungle. Pause for a quick photo before continuing into the park.
- Iliau Nature Loop Trail - As you walk the trail, take note of the interpretive signs detailing the native plants.
The trail is named after a rare, exotic plant – the iliau or Kaua’i greensword – found exclusively on Kaua’i.
- Waimea Canyon Lookout - This is the first of two lookouts at Waimea Canyon, offering some of the most breathtaking views on a clear day.
Stand at the lookout to admire the vastness of this natural marvel.
- Waipo’o Falls Trail - Guidance will be provided to a small parking area for a view of an 800-foot waterfall cascading into the canyon.
- Pu’u Hinahina Lookout - This is the second of the two lookouts for Waimea Canyon. At the end of the parking lot is the trailhead for Canyon Trail.
The trail signs can be a bit confusing, so be sure to read the description under Hiking in the app Highlights before setting out.
- Canyon Trail - This marks the first major hike of the day! The trail begins at the parking lot, leading you about ¾ of a mile through lush jungle to a spot known as Cliff Viewpoint.
- Kōkeʻe Lodge - The lodge and museum at Koke’e are situated on a small plateau in the mountain. The lodge offers a sit-down restaurant with satisfying food if you’re hungry.
Occasionally, live music is featured! The museum showcases displays of native plants, animals, and birds.
- Kalalau Lookout - Here, enjoy your first glimpse of the magnificent Na Pali Coast.
Don’t be discouraged if dense fog obscures the view. It’s common at this altitude.
Try waiting a few minutes as the fog often clears intermittently.
- Pu’u O Kila Lookout - From this vantage point, you can see the iconic Na Pali coast.
Additionally, you can view the peak of Mt. Wai’ale’ale and Alaka’i Swamp - one of the wettest places on Earth, receiving about 450 inches of rain annually.
- JoJo’s Shave Ice - Their shave ice is available in a variety of tropical and traditional flavors. It’s recommended to try one of their combos with vanilla or macadamia nut ice cream. The small size is ample for sharing.
- Kiki a Ola (Menehune Ditch) - At the mountain’s base, just beyond the old swinging bridge, lies a hidden gem that unveils a fascinating aspect of Kauai’s history: the Menehune Ditch.
You might wonder, what’s so special about a ditch?
Well, the story of the Menehune who built this ditch thousands of years ago will be shared.
- Captain James Cook Statue - In 1778, Captain Cook became the first Westerner to discover Hawaii.
The location where Cook first landed in Hawai’i is right here in Waimea. His statue is prominently displayed in the town center.
- Hanapepe - In Hanapepe, you’ll find charming art boutiques, restaurants, murals, and an intriguing little bookstore called Talk Story.
In fact, it’s the westernmost bookstore in the United States! Feel free to stop by as we take a quick drive through the town.
- Hanapepe Swinging Bridge - If you’re interested in a unique swinging bridge, there’s one in Hanapepe. Keep an eye out for the sign while exploring the town.
- Lawai - Hanapepe is just a short distance from Lawai, where the tour began. Guidance will be provided back in that direction, accompanied by an entertaining story about Kauai’s “state bird.”
