A Journey Through Kilohana Plantation

As a family travel writer, I’m always on the lookout for experiences that can captivate both adults and children alike. When I heard about the Luau Kalamaku in Kauai, I knew it was something I had to experience with my family. We decided to start our adventure with the optional train ride around the Kilohana Plantation. This charming ride, although more geared towards kids, was a delightful way to explore the lush surroundings. The train made a stop, allowing us to feed the pigs, horse, and donkey. My kids were thrilled, and I was grateful for the hand sanitizer provided, though I recommend bringing some wipes for the inevitable slobber from our new animal friends.

Upon returning to the train depot, we were greeted by the warm ambiance of the luau entrance. The depot, with its quaint gift shop and proximity to the Koloa Rum Company, set the stage for an exciting evening. We even considered a quick rum tasting before the festivities began, but the allure of the luau was too strong to resist.

A Feast for the Senses

As we entered the luau, we were welcomed with the opportunity to have professional photos taken. It was a lovely touch, and the photos were reasonably priced, making for a perfect keepsake of our Hawaiian adventure. The open bar was a hit, and I must say, the bartenders were fantastic. I made sure to tip them generously as we sipped on our Mai Tais and explored the craft fair. The local artisans displayed beautiful handmade items, and I couldn’t resist purchasing a unique ornament and a handmade purse for my granddaughter.

We opted for an upgraded table to be closer to the action, and it was well worth it. Even during the slow season, the view was spectacular, but I can imagine that during peak times, the upgrade would be essential. The buffet dinner was a delightful surprise, with a variety of dishes clearly labeled, which was a relief given my food allergies. The food was delicious, and the dessert buffet was equally impressive, with no lines to contend with.

The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the show. The performers were mesmerizing, bringing the ancient Hawaiian legend of Kalamaku to life with grace and passion. The storytelling, dancing, and fire performances were breathtaking, and my family was completely enthralled. It was a magical experience that left us all in awe.

We shared our table with four other couples, and by the end of the night, we had made new friends. The sense of community and shared enjoyment added to the overall experience, making it a night to remember. As we left the plantation, we encountered a bit of a wait due to the traffic lights, but it was a small price to pay for such an unforgettable evening.

The Luau Kalamaku was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone visiting Kauai. It’s a perfect blend of culture, entertainment, and camaraderie that will leave you with cherished memories.
