A Change of Plans

As a seasoned surfer, I’ve learned that the ocean has a mind of its own. You can plan all you want, but sometimes the waves and winds have other ideas. That’s exactly what happened when my wife and I set out to explore the legendary NāPali Coast. We were all set for a day of adventure, but Mother Nature had different plans. The surf was too rough, and the winds were uncooperative, leading to the cancellation of our tour.

But as any true ocean lover knows, flexibility is key. Makana Charters, the company we booked with, offered us a choice: a refund, a reschedule, or an alternative tour of the southern coast. We opted for the latter, and it turned out to be a decision we wouldn’t regret.

Discovering the Southern Coast

Our adventure began with a warm welcome from the crew: Captain Mike, Kana, and Lili. Their friendly demeanor and deep knowledge of the ocean, local culture, and history made us feel like we were in for something special. As we set sail, the southern coast of Kauai unfolded before us, revealing its own unique beauty.

The wildlife was abundant and awe-inspiring. We spotted monk seals lounging on the beach, goats perched on the coastal cliffs, and even a humpback whale breaching in the distance. The highlight, however, was the sea turtles. At one point, they swam right past our boat, diving gracefully into the caves below. It was a sight that left us all in awe.

The crew’s expertise extended beyond marine life. They shared fascinating insights into the coastal real estate and the history of the area, painting a vivid picture of life on this beautiful island. Their passion for the ocean and their culture was infectious, and it added a rich layer to our experience.

Snorkeling Bliss

No trip to the coast would be complete without a dip in the crystal-clear waters. The snorkeling was nothing short of amazing. As I slipped beneath the surface, I was greeted by a vibrant underwater world teeming with life. Schools of colorful fish darted around me, and I even had a close encounter with a curious moon jelly.

The second snorkeling spot was a bit choppier, but it was worth it to see the turtles up close. Watching them glide effortlessly through the water was pure joy. I could have stayed in that underwater paradise for hours, completely lost in the moment.

As we sailed back to shore, the crew made sure to capture the memories with photos against the stunning backdrop of the coast. It was the perfect end to an unforgettable day on the water.

In the end, our change of plans led to an unexpected adventure that we’ll cherish forever. The southern coast of Kauai may not have been our original destination, but it captured our hearts just the same.
