Airport - Anuradhapura

Bandaranaike International Airport - Upon arrival by flight, passengers will be directed to the arrival terminal. After completing immigration and visa procedures, collecting baggage, and passing through the green channel if there are no customs declarations, a representative from Apple Vacation will greet you with a paging board displaying your name. They will introduce you to your English-speaking chauffeur guide, who will transport you to your hotel in Anuradhapura.

Negombo - Before exploring Sri Lanka, visit Negombo, known as “Little Rome” due to its numerous places of worship and successful European conversion of locals to Catholicism. Most hotels and guesthouses are located along the main road parallel to the seashore, north of the town center.

Anuradhapura - Check into your luxury hotel and relax for the evening, or enjoy a 30-minute horseback ride offered by the hotel.

Ranmasu Uyana - Located north of Isurumuniya, Ranmasu Uyana’s origins are unknown, but it was likely established as an alternative to parks donated to the maha sanga. The ponds are designed with precise irrigation techniques, allowing water from Tissa Weva to flow through all ponds and tanks before being used for irrigation.

Ruwanwelisaya - Ruwanwelisaya is one of the eight venerated sites in Anuradhapura. The stupa, believed to have been visited by Buddha during his visits to Sri Lanka, is near the Maha Bodhi tree and is an architectural marvel. (03 Hrs. - Ancient City combined)

Jethawanaramaya Stupa - Jethawana Stupa, the largest in Sri Lanka, originally stood 400 feet (122 meters) tall and was the third tallest building in the world at the time. Today, it remains the tallest brick monument of its kind. (03 Hrs - Ancient City combined)

Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi - The Jaya Sri Maha Bodhiya in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, is the oldest living tree in documented history. Abhayagiri Dagaba - This colossal dagoba was the ceremonial center of the Abhayagiri Monastery in India. Originally over 100m high, it was one of the ancient world’s greatest structures. Today, after several reconstructions, it stands 75m above the forest floor. (03 Hrs - Ancient City combined)

Dagoba of Thuparama - Thuparama Dagoba, the oldest in Sri Lanka, was built by King Devanampiya Tissa in the 3rd century BC. Its original ‘heap-of-paddy-rice’ shape was restored to a more conventional bell shape in 1862. (03 Hrs - Ancient City combined)

Mirisaveti Stupa - Built by King Dutugamunu (161-137 BC), Mirisawetiya Dagaba is part of the Mahavihara Complex. It is said the king named it “Mirisavatiya” after forgetting to offer a chili dish (miris) to Buddhist priests before eating it. (03 Hrs - Ancient City combined)

The Royal Palace (Vijayabahu Maligaya) - Constructed in 1070, this palace was King Vijayabahu I’s attempt to connect his reign with the ancient Sinhalese capital’s glory. Today, only two modest guard stones remain.

Lankarama Stupa - The Lankarama Stupa has been renovated, but little remains of the vatadage except for a few broken pillars in the large courtyard. The stupa’s name was changed from Silasobha Khandaka Cetiya to Lankaramaya. (03 Hrs - Ancient City combined)

Lovamahapaya - Also known as the Brazen Palace or Lohaprasada, Lovamahapaya in Sri Lanka is a set of ruins with hundreds of stone pillars between Ruwanwelisaya and the Great Bodhi Tree of Anuradhapura. It was once a mighty nine-storied monastic structure built by King Dutugemmunu in the 2nd century BC. (03 Hrs - Ancient City combined)

Samadhi Statue - The Samadhi Statue is one of the finest sculptures from the Anuradhapura era. Made of dolomite marble, it stands 7 feet 3 inches (2.21 meters) tall. The statue’s hollow eyes suggest they were once adorned with crystals or precious stones.

Mihintale - With Buddhism’s arrival in Sri Lanka, Mihintale Mountain became a residential area for monks led by Arahath Mahinda Mahathera. With royal patronage, the sanctuary housed numerous monastic buildings, stupas, uposathgharas, and bodhigharas.

Ritigala Forest Monastery - Ritigala Mountain is the highest in Sri Lanka’s north-central dry plains. It serves as the watershed for Malwatu Oya, which feeds the Nachaduwa tank and Kalueba Ela, supplying Huruluwewa.

Isurumuniya Temple - This charming rock temple, dating from Devanampiya Tissa’s reign (307–267 BC), is set around a lovely lotus pond with carved elephant images. The central temple features fine mural paintings. Climb to the rock summit to see the bell-shaped stupa and Buddha footprints etched into the rock. (03 Hrs - Ancient City combined)

Kalu Diya Pokuna Natural Black Water Pond - The approach to this ancient site is pleasant, winding through paddy fields and vegetable cultivations typical of rural Sri Lanka, leading to beautiful stands of tall, dry monsoon forest. Peacocks often cross the road. The archaeological site at Kaludiya Pokuna has a few ruins, including a stupa, and shows signs of neglect.

Moonstone or Sandakada Pahana - The moonstone (Sandakada Pahana) is a permanent feature of Buddhist buildings from all historical periods. It is a semi-circular stone at the foot of steps in most Buddhist buildings. While generally semi-circular, some moonstones are square. They likely originated as blank square stones, later developing into semi-circular shapes with intricate carvings. (03 Hrs - Ancient City combined)

Vessagiriya Ruins - Vessagiriya is located a few hundred meters left of the current Isurumuniya on the old Anuradhapura-Kurunegala road. This temple complex is spread across three beautiful boulder formations near Tissa Weva. One of these has a dagaba’s remains. Remains of 23 caves with drip ledges used by monks can be seen on two rock formations.

Abhayagiri Museum - South of the Abhayagiri Dagoba, this museum is arguably Anuradhapura’s most interesting, containing squatting plates, jewelry, pottery, and religious sculptures from the site. The new museum at Abhayagiri Monastery, established in memory of Fa-hien, houses treasures discovered during excavations.

Anuradhapura - After breakfast at the hotel, transfer to Sigiriya Rock Fortress.

Ibbankatuwa Megalithic Tombs - Ibbankatuwa Ancient burial ground is located five kilometers before Dambulla town on the Kurunegala-Dambulla Road. An archaeological department board indicates the turn-off from the main road. The site is reached by traveling about 500m into this road. Developed into a tourist attraction in 2017, it was formally opened to the public.

Sigiriya Museum - This museum offers a fine diorama of the site, providing an excellent overview and explaining Sigiriya’s cultural importance beyond its natural beauty. The theory that Sigiriya was a Buddhist monastery is presented here, although the established view is that it was a palace or fortress. (Combine with Sigiriya fortress)

Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress - Rising dramatically from the central plains, Sigiriya is perhaps Sri Lanka’s most dramatic sight. Near-vertical walls lead to a flat-topped summit with ruins of an ancient civilization, believed to be the epicenter of the short-lived Kassapa kingdom, offering spellbinding views across mist-wrapped forests in the early morning.

Pidurangala Rock - Adjacent to Sigiriya Rock, Pidurangala Rock offers the best view of Sigiriya Rock, being only slightly lower. Pidurangala is a popular sunrise spot, offering 360-degree views of the valleys and Sigiriya Rock.

Minneriya National Park - A main reason for visiting Sri Lanka is to see the Sri Lankan elephant in the wild. Kaudulla/Minneriya National Park is one of the best places to spot elephants in Sri Lanka, home to over 200 elephants, monkeys, crocodiles, and even a few leopards. The Gathering around the water reservoir occurs during the dry season from July to October. Besides elephants, there is much more to see, including peacocks, small black bears, crocodiles, deer, many monkeys, and beautifully colored birds.

Ederagala Wana Senasuna - Enderagala Wana Senasuna is a Buddhist temple in a calm and quiet location in Dambulla, Matale District, Sri Lanka. According to inscriptions found in the caves, the temple dates back to the 2nd – 1st century B.C. Located beside the Ambepussa – Kurunegala – Trincomalee (A006) Highway, it is only 6km from Dambulla city. Enderagala Wana Senasuna can be reached within 15 minutes from Dambulla Cave Temple.

Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium - Sri Lanka’s 30,000-seat Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium is located in Dambulla on land leased from the Rangiri Dambulla Temple. It is the first and only international cricket pitch in Sri Lanka’s dry zone. The Dambulla Tank (reservoir) and Dambulla Rock are visible from the stadium.

Dambulla Dedicated Economic Centre - Located in the Dambulla Secretariat Division of Matale District, in the center of Dambulla town, this market was established in 1999 as a wholesale market for vegetables and fruits. A key feature of the DDEC is the direct participation of farmers in selling their produce.

Golden Temple of Dambulla - Dambulla is one of Sri Lanka’s most popular tourist destinations, known for its historical and religious significance. Visitors can feel the Buddhist influence even before arriving in the city. (photo stop)

Golden Temple of Dambulla - The Rock Temple of Dambulla, known as Jumbukola Vihara (Dambulla Cave Temple) in the Mahavamsa, the principal Pali Chronicle of Sri Lanka, is located about 47 miles northwest of Kandy, the last capital of the Sinhalese kings, on the main road to Anuradhapura. Dambulla is a site of unique interest, with its rock temples being the most extensive and ancient in the Island, in excellent preservation and order.

Kandy Lake Club - Cultural Dance Show - Kandyan dance performances are a defining experience in Kandy. Although called traditional Kandyan dance performances, the shows are aimed at entertaining audiences and include dance routines and costumes from across the country, including the famous ‘devil’ dances of the west coast, which are rare in their home region.

Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic - The golden-roofed Temple of the Sacred Tooth houses Sri Lanka’s most important Buddhist relic, a tooth of the Buddha. During puja (offerings or prayers), the heavily guarded room housing the tooth is open to devotees and tourists. However, the tooth itself is not visible, as it is kept in a gold casket shaped like a dagoba (stupa), containing a series of six dagoba caskets of diminishing size. The complex also includes smaller temples, shrines, and museums.

Kandy Lake - Kandy Lake, also known as Kiri Muhuda or the Sea of Milk, is an artificial lake in the heart of Kandy, Sri Lanka, built in 1807 by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe next to the Temple of the Tooth. Over the years, it has been reduced in size. It is a protected lake, with fishing banned. Many legends and folklore surround the lake, including one that the small island at its center was used by the king’s helm for bathing and was connected to the palace by a secret tunnel.

Kandy View Point - Climb the hill by Kandy Lake to reach Kandy viewpoint for an unbeatable view of the city. As a popular tourist spot, the area attracts many peddlers, though they often sell sub-par items. The area is also known for pickpocket activity, so keep an eye on your belongings. From the hill, enjoy great views over the lake and the city.

Kandy – Ella (By Train)

Kandy - After breakfast at the hotel, transfer from Kandy to Peradeniya Railway Station to proceed to Ella by train.

Ella - Train journeys are cultural experiences, and the most scenic routes will be highlights of your visit, particularly the journey from Kandy to Ella Train Station, which travels through tunnels, mountains, and tea plantations in the hill country. The scenery from the train is breathtaking, with a green carpet of tea bushes and colorful sari-dressed tea pickers. Journey time is 6 to 7 hours.

Little Adam’s Peak - Little Adams Peak, named after the sacred Adams Peak (Sri Pada, where Buddha’s footprint is preserved), resembles the larger mountain. Also known as “Punchi Sri Pada,” it stands 1141 meters high. Little Adam’s Peak attracts many travelers to Sri Lanka. The easy hike up the mountain offers panoramic views. Yala - Galle - Colombo

Galle - Galle is Sri Lanka’s most historically interesting town. Once a major port, it still handles shipping and sailing boats in the natural harbor. Stroll around the lighthouse and harbor or visit the old town to see traditional lace makers and wood carvers and purchase fine souvenirs.

Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct - Located in Galle, the Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct is a shopping mall in a beautifully restored colonial building from the Dutch occupation. Galle Fort Lighthouse - The Galle lighthouse is inside the landmark Galle Fort, built seven meters above the road on the ramparts. It is Sri Lanka’s oldest light station, dating back to 1848, though the original lighthouse was destroyed by fire in 1934. It was rebuilt at the current height of 26m. The light station is within the ancient Galle fort, a UNESCO world heritage site and popular tourist attraction, making it the country’s most visited lighthouse. (combines with Galle fort)

Dutch Reformed Church - Originally built in 1640, the present building dates from 1752. Its floor is paved with gravestones from Dutch cemeteries, and other impressive features include the organ and an imposing pulpit made from calamander wood, topped by a grand hexagonal canopy. Maritime Archeology Museum - The National Maritime Museum of Galle is filled with nautical and marine marvels, excavated from the sea and showcased here. Galle has always been a major harbor, visited by ships and traders from across the globe for millennia. It did not escape the Dutch traders, who prioritized profit above all else.

Galle International Cricket Stadium - Once a racecourse for British colonials, Galle’s cricket ground was established over 100 years ago. Since 1998, it has hosted international matches; in 2010, it was the site of the legendary last appearance of Sri Lanka’s great bowler, Muttiah Muralitharan. The ground offers a great perspective from the Sun Bastion to the south.

Galle Fort Clock Tower - Galle Clock Tower is a four-story stone monument from the late 19th century, built within the Galle Fort ramparts on the site of the previous guardroom, overlooking one of the fort’s three bastions. While the aged clock tower is a great monument to photograph, it requires skillful maneuvering due to the extreme angle nearby. It may be better to photograph it from the Moon Bastion, which the tower faces. (combines with Galle fort)

Colombo - Colombo, like many capital cities in developing countries, is rapidly changing. Skyscrapers rise where old buildings once stood, yet some areas retain old-world charm. For example, there is a 100-year-old clock tower and several British-built colonial buildings. Other places of interest include the Pettah bazaar, where you can shop for bargains, a Hindu and a Buddhist temple, residential areas with stately homes of the affluent, and the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH), a gift to Sri Lanka from the People’s Republic of China.
