Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress - Sigiriya, also known as Lion’s Rock, is an ancient rock fortress and palace, recognized as one of Sri Lanka’s seven World Heritage Sites and declared by UNESCO as the 8th Wonder of the World.
Encircled by the remnants of an extensive network of gardens and reservoirs, Sigiriya is rich in history. Dating back to the 5th century BC, the fortress served as a rock shelter mountain monastery, with caves prepared and donated by devotees to the Buddhist Sangha.
It is believed that King Kashyapa (477-495 AD) constructed the entire complex, with most of the intricate structures on the rock summit originating from this era, including defensive structures, palaces, and gardens. A royal bathing pool on the summit still collects rainwater.
A notable feature of Sigiriya is the Mirror Wall, originally polished to reflect the King’s image as he walked beside it. Today, the wall is partially covered with verses inscribed by visitors, some dating back to the 8th century. The wall frescoes are shrouded in mystery and the subject of many legends.
Whether interested in art and history or not, visiting Sigiriya is essential to witness the breathtaking views.

Dambulla Cave Temple - Dambulla is the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. The rock rises 160 meters above the surrounding plains. There are over 80 documented caves in the area. Major attractions are spread across five caves, containing statues and paintings related to Gautama Buddha and his life. There are 153 Buddha statues, three statues of Sri Lankan kings, and four statues of gods and goddesses, including Vishnu and Ganesha. The murals cover an area of 2,100 square meters (23,000 sq ft). Depictions on the cave walls include the temptation by the demon Mara and Buddha’s first sermon.
Prehistoric Sri Lankans likely inhabited these cave complexes before Buddhism’s arrival in Sri Lanka, as burial sites with human skeletons about 2700 years old have been found in this area, near the Dambulla cave complexes.
Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic - Situated in Kandy, a long-standing center of the Buddhist faith, the magnificent 17th-century Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa) is believed to house the left upper canine tooth of Lord Buddha. This sacred relic draws white-clad pilgrims, carrying lotus blossoms and frangipani, daily.
In the Central Highlands, nearly at the heart of Sri Lanka, lies Kandy City. The city’s crown jewel is the renowned Sri Dalada Maligawa, also known as the Temple of the Tooth. ‘Maligawa’ translates to palace, and the temple is part of the palace complex. The entire complex is over three centuries old and has witnessed the rise and fall of many kings. It has seen both bloody wars and peaceful reigns and remains one of the island’s most historical sites.
