Sita Temple - The Seetha Amman Temple, situated in Seetha Eliya near Nuwara Eliya, is a significant site on the Ramayana trail in Sri Lanka. According to the Ramayana, this is where Princess Seetha was held captive by King Ravana after her abduction from India.
It is believed that Seetha resided here during her captivity, and the tranquil surroundings mirror the environment described in the epic. The temple complex features a stream where Seetha is said to have bathed, and nearby rocks bear footprint-like impressions attributed to Lord Hanuman.
Divurumpola - Located near Welimada in Sri Lanka, Divurumpola is a revered site closely associated with the Ramayana. Legend has it that this is where Princess Seetha underwent the Agni Pariksha (trial by fire) to prove her purity after being rescued by Lord Rama from King Ravana.
The name “Divurumpola” is derived from the Sinhala words Divuru (oath) and Pola (place), meaning “the place of oath,” referring to Seetha’s vow of purity. It is believed that Seetha emerged unscathed from the fire here, reaffirming her chastity and devotion.
Today, Divurumpola Temple is honored as a powerful spiritual site, symbolizing truth, faith, and righteousness, and is a key stop on the Ramayana Trail in Sri Lanka. Devotees visit the temple to seek blessings, particularly for marital harmony and trust.
Ramboda Waterfall - Ramboda Waterfalls, located in the picturesque hill country between Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, is linked to the Ramayana through legends associated with King Ravana. It is believed that this area was part of the route used by Ravana when he transported Princess Seetha after abducting her from India.
The surrounding mountains and dense forests are said to have served as hiding and resting areas for Ravana, making Ramboda a significant location along the Ramayana Trail. Some legends also suggest that Ravana’s forces guarded this region to prevent Lord Rama’s army from advancing toward the central highlands.
Gayathri Peedam - Gayathri Peedam, located in Nuwara Eliya, is a sacred Ramayana Trail site linked to King Ravana and Goddess Gayatri. According to legend, this is where Ravana worshipped Goddess Gayatri and received divine blessings that enhanced his knowledge, power, and mastery over the Vedas.
It is believed that Ravana, a great scholar and devotee, performed intense penance here, chanting the Gayatri Mantra. The high-altitude, peaceful surroundings of Nuwara Eliya are said to have been ideal for deep meditation and spiritual practices.
Today, Gayathri Peedam is revered as a powerful spiritual center and an important stop on the Ramayana Trail in Sri Lanka, symbolizing Ravana’s wisdom, devotion, and spiritual strength, beyond his role as a mighty king.

Kataragama Temple - Kataragama Temple, located in southern Sri Lanka, is a significant sacred site connected to the Ramayana. According to legend, after King Ravana’s defeat, Lord Rama visited Kataragama to seek blessings and perform rituals to atone for the sin of killing Ravana, who was a learned Brahmin and a great devotee of Lord Shiva.
The temple is dedicated to Lord Skanda (Murugan / Kataragama Deviyo), whom Lord Rama is believed to have worshipped here. This visit symbolized gratitude, repentance, and divine balance after the great war of Lanka.
Today, Kataragama is revered by Hindus, Buddhists, and indigenous Vedda devotees, making it a unique multi-faith pilgrimage site. As part of the Ramayana Trail, Kataragama Temple represents Lord Rama’s devotion and spiritual completion of his journey in Lanka.

Ussangoda National Park - Ussangoda, located near Tangalle in southern Sri Lanka, is a mysterious and unique landscape strongly linked to the Ramayana. According to legend, this area was burned and destroyed by Lord Hanuman while searching for Princess Seetha, leaving the land scorched and barren.
It is believed that Hanuman landed at Ussangoda after crossing the ocean from India, and the impact of his landing or his fiery tail burnt the earth, which is why the soil here is reddish-black, infertile, and unlike surrounding areas. Even today, very little vegetation grows in this region.
Ussangoda is considered one of the landing sites of Hanuman in Lanka and is an important stop on the Ramayana Trail, symbolizing Hanuman’s strength, devotion, and the beginning of the battle against King Ravana.
Rumassala - Rumassala, located near Unawatuna in southern Sri Lanka, is one of the most significant sites connected to the Ramayana. According to legend, during the battle of Lanka, Lord Hanuman carried the Sanjeevani mountain from the Himalayas to revive Lakshmana, who was wounded in battle.
While flying over Lanka, a fragment of the Sanjeevani mountain fell at Rumassala, bringing with it rare medicinal herbs not native to Sri Lanka. Because of this, Rumassala is believed to contain unique healing plants found nowhere else on the island.
Rumassala symbolizes Hanuman’s devotion, strength, and selfless service, and today it is an important stop on the Ramayana Trail, blending natural beauty, mythology, and spiritual significance.
