In front of JR Shibamata station, there are bronze statues of “Tora-san” and his charming younger sister “Sakura.”
- Taishakuten-Sando - At the end of the path stands the impressive Nitenmon gate of Shibamata Taishakuten temple, boasting a history of approximately 400 years. The Nitenmon gate is constructed entirely from durable, mold-resistant zelkova trees, ensuring longevity and artistic beauty. Upon entering the compound, visitors first pray to the Bodhisattva and then purify themselves at the purification site. A magnificent Kuromatsu pine tree, named “Zuiryu no Matsu,” meaning “the dragon ascends to the heaven,” is believed to be over 500 years old.
- Shibamata Taishakuten (Taishakuten Daikyoji Temple) - The main hall leads to a Wooden Carving Gallery and a traditional Japanese garden called Suikei-en (admission: 400 yen per person). The temple is renowned as the “Temple of Carving” due to the numerous wood carvings both inside and outside. After visiting the gallery, visitors can remove their shoes and walk along the corridor leading to the Japanese garden “Suikei-en” within the compound. While strolling on the wooden corridor encircling the garden, one can enjoy the changing seasonal scenery.
- Yamamototei - Just a few minutes from Shibamata Taishakuten temple is Yamamoto-tei, a former merchant’s residence that blends Japanese and Western styles, creating a harmonious fusion of a Japanese drawing room, Western architecture, and a Japanese garden. All rooms are open-designed with minimal walls and face the garden over a corridor. Visitors can relax on tatami mats, listening to the sound of a waterfall at the back of the garden, while enjoying matcha tea and sweets available here.
- Tokyo Skytree - Soramachi is an entertainment spot located at the base of Tokyo Skytree, featuring the Sumida Aquarium, restaurants, and shopping areas where visitors can find perfect souvenirs. During the day, guests can watch penguins swimming energetically in the Sumida Aquarium.
- Senso-ji Temple - Sensoji Temple is Tokyo’s oldest and most beloved temple among locals. The area from the Thunder Gate to the main hall of Sensoji Temple is illuminated from sunset until 11:00 pm, creating a stunning night view with fewer people. During the day, Sensoji Temple is bustling with tourists and worshippers.
