Jozani Forest - An experienced guide will lead your tour through the Jozani Forest Reserve, offering extensive knowledge of the reserve’s flora and fauna.
As you navigate the park’s network of nature trails, be on the lookout for some of the forest’s inhabitants. In addition to the colobus monkey, you may encounter Sykes’ monkeys, bush pigs, Zanzibar suni, tree hyraxes, and Ader’s duiker, along with over 40 species of birds, including a Fischer’s turaco with uniquely colored wings.
At a particular location, you can often find two groups of habituated red colobus monkeys, who are accustomed to human presence. Consequently, they continue their daily activities with little regard for the humans observing them, making it an excellent spot for photography.
In the southern part of the forest, a boardwalk leads deep into the mangrove swamps, where you can learn how this intriguing ecosystem safeguards the Zanzibar coastline.

These monkeys, native to Zanzibar, are now frequently seen in the reserve, with an estimated population of nearly 2,500.
Since the mid-1990s, Kirk’s red colobus has been recognized as the flagship species for conservation efforts in Zanzibar. The park is also home to other wildlife, including the Sykes monkey, bushbabies, over 50 butterfly species, and 40 bird species. The nocturnal Zanzibar tree hyrax, notable for having four toes on its front feet and three on its back, is believed to be the first hyrax species to adapt to the forest environment.
The forest is also rumored to harbor the elusive leopard, although no official sightings have been reported for several decades.
