The National Museum holds the distinction of being Nepal’s first public museum, though it wasn’t open to the public until 1938. Initially, it served as an arsenal museum and a repository for weapons, as well as a private collection for the Royal family and Rana Prime Ministers. In 1938 AD, it became accessible to the public and was called “Chhauni Silkhana.” It was renamed the Nepal Museum in 1942 and officially became the National Museum (Rastriya Sangrahalaya) in 1967. Since its establishment, the museum has amassed thousands of pre-historical, archaeological, historical, and culturally significant items, securing its status as a key repository of ancient Nepalese art, culture, sculpture, and painting.
Located opposite the National Museum in a military compound, this site will likely attract enthusiasts of military history. Displayed outside the museum are a two-person tank, Nepal’s first Rolls-Royce, gifted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1961, and a Skyvan transport plane.
