Lhasa Suburb Highlights: Drepung Monastery, Sera Monastery
Drepung Monastery (Zhebang Si) - Today, you will explore two attractions in the Lhasa suburb. In the morning, you’ll visit Drepung Monastery, and in the afternoon, Sera Monastery. Prepare for a long day of sightseeing under Tibet’s bright sun by bringing sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen.
A welcome dinner will be held tonight to introduce you to your fellow travelers from around the world. It will be a delightful opportunity to meet people from diverse countries, cultures, and backgrounds.
Located about 8km west of central Lhasa, Drepung Monastery was once one of the world’s largest monasteries. The name Drepung means ‘rice heap’, referring to the numerous white monastic buildings that once covered the hillside.
Sera Monastery is situated in the northern suburb of Lhasa City. The monastery’s name, Sera, means wild rose in Tibetan, as the hill behind it was covered with blooming wild roses when it was built. From Monday to Friday, every afternoon, you can witness monks debating at Sera Monastery.

Potala Palace - This morning, visit Potala Palace, which stands more than 3,700 meters above sea level, making it the highest palace in the world! From the top, known as the golden roofs, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Lhasa, with mountain ranges, the beautiful Lhasa River, fields, tree-shaded villages, and the glistening Jokhang Temple in the distance.
In the afternoon, visit Jokhang Temple, built during the reign of Sontsan Gambo in the 7th century. It features Buddhist prayer wheels, reclining deer, and golden sutra streamers. Many pilgrims pray before the monastery.
