Tour of 4 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Kathmandu
Swayambhunath - Known as “The Monkey Temple,” Swayambhunath Stupa is perched atop Kathmandu. Visitors can climb 365 steps to reach the summit, offering a stunning view of the city. Along the way, there are numerous small shrines and souvenir shops, with monkeys freely roaming. Feel free to take photos, as some monkeys might even pose. At the top, a large gold-plated thunderbolt (Vajra) is a notable monument. Nearby is the large white dome with a cubical top, the Swayambhunath Stupa, which withstood the 2015 earthquake while other temples crumbled. Prayer wheels of various sizes are found throughout the area.
Patan Durbar Square - Located in Lalitpur, Patan Durbar Square is the courtyard of the old Malla palace, showcasing Newari architecture and culture. The square is paved with red bricks and features three courtyards. Sundari Chowk is adorned with statues and stone architecture. Mul Chowk is a guarded area due to past thefts of sculptures. The final courtyard, Keshav Narayan Chowk, houses the Durbar Square museum, displaying artifacts related to ancient eastern civilization and art.
Golden Temple (Hiranya Varna Mahavihar) - The tour includes a visit to the Golden Temple in the north. Hiranya Varna Mahavihar, a 12th-century pagoda-style temple, is adorned with bronze statues and silver and gold decorations. It features a golden image of Lord Buddha and a large prayer wheel on the upper level. The tour concludes with a return to the hotel or a predetermined destination.
Pashupatinath Temple - Pashupatinath Temple is one of Nepal’s largest temple complexes, with over 500 temples and shrines. Spanning 0.64 hectares, it is primarily dedicated to Lord Shiva, with other deities’ temples surrounding the main temple. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the central pagoda-style temple boasts intricate wood carvings and gold-covered roofs. A large bronze statue of a bull faces the main entrance. Visitors can observe Sadhus performing daily rites and witness Hindu cremation ceremonies along the Bagmati River.
Boudhanath Stupa - Boudhanath Stupa, a significant Buddhist pilgrimage site, stands 36 meters tall with over 50 gompas surrounding it. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it attracts both spiritual seekers and tourists. The stupa’s premises feature a large dome with fluttering prayer flags and the scent of incense. During prayer times, the atmosphere is filled with chimes and prayer sounds. The area also offers eateries and souvenir shops.
