- Namo Buddha (Stupa) - The Kathmandu Valley has long been recognized as a sacred destination for Buddhists. This valley radiates a distinct spirituality that is rare to find elsewhere. It is home to three remarkable Buddhist heritage sites that have drawn visitors for millennia. While Swayambhu and Bouddhanath are easily accessible, Namo Buddha presents a bit more of a challenge due to its location on a high point overlooking the Himalayas, away from the main cities of the Valley. Nevertheless, it is possible to complete a pilgrimage here in just half a day.
Namo Buddha honors the profound, selfless love demonstrated by Lord Buddha during his enlightenment. In a previous life, Lord Buddha was a prince in the Kathmandu Valley when he encountered a starving tigress who had just given birth. Exhausted from labor, she was on the brink of death due to hunger.
The tigress gazed at the young prince, and in an act of love, he offered his arm, sacrificing his life to nourish the tigress so she could produce milk for her cubs. As the prince and future Buddha lay dying, the tigress gained new vitality, enabling her to provide life-sustaining milk for her offspring.
The story of Namo Buddha highlights the value Lord Buddha placed on all forms of life, whether human or animal. The grounds here exude a profound serenity, far removed from the hustle and bustle of the Kathmandu Valley’s cities. The mountain breezes grace the landscape, inviting visitors to explore the gardens surrounding the monastery and the large statue commemorating Lord Buddha’s sacrifice. From this elevated vantage point, one can admire the stunning snow-capped Himalayan ranges to the north. Experience the tranquility of this place as it touches your soul.
This journey takes just half a day, with a private car picking you up from your hotel in the morning and taking you to Namo Buddha.
- Thrangu Tashi Monastery - Upon arrival, a guide will lead you through the site, including the cave where the young prince and future Buddha encountered the tigress and her cubs, as well as the renowned Thrangu Tashi Monastery. Namo Buddha commemorates an earlier existence of Lord Buddha in his sacrificial love to a dying tigress. It was here that he offered his arm as well as his life to feed the dying tigress so she could feed her newborn cubs that lay dying because of their mother’s weakness. It is a wonderful place to contemplate such unselfish love of the young prince who would eventually become in another life the great Buddha himself.
The journey begins at 8 am after breakfast and will return to your hotel around 2 pm.
