Swoyambhu Mahachaitya - Situated atop a hill west of the Kathmandu Valley, this site is a popular and instantly recognizable symbol of Nepal. Many tourists refer to it as the “Monkey Temple” due to the large tribes of monkeys that inhabit the area. According to legend, the Bodhisattva Manjushree drained the water from a lake, revealing the Kathmandu Valley. The lotus on the lake’s island transformed into the hillock, and the blazing light from the lotus became the statue.

Pashupatinath Temple - Pashupatinath is one of the most sacred Shiva temples on the Indian subcontinent, attracting devotees from all over India, including many colorful Sadhus (wandering holy men). It is the largest temple complex in Nepal. Visiting Pashupatinath marks the beginning and end of a traditional pilgrimage circuit. Lord Pashupatinath’s supreme holiness is derived from the sacred linga enshrined in the main temple and its location on the banks of the sacred Bagmati River. The sanctity of the Bagmati makes Pashupatinath Nepal’s most revered cremation site. After cremation, the ashes are scattered into the river, where they are carried downstream to meet the Ganges.
