Chitlang is situated in the Makawanpur district, approximately 22 kilometers southwest of Kathmandu. Before the Tribhuwan Highway was established, Chitlang served as the sole footpath to India and the southern regions of Nepal. It is notably the location where the first motor vehicle was manually transported into the Kathmandu Valley.
The area is rich with historical significance, featuring numerous temples adorned with exquisite wood and stone carvings, artistic rest houses, stone taps, and centuries-old inscriptions, all testifying to a sophisticated society of the past. The expansive green fields further enhance Chitlang’s appeal. A large garden with over a thousand pear trees provides a delightful experience, blending natural beauty with cultural heritage. The hills surrounding Chitlang are renowned for offering some of the finest short hiking and trekking opportunities near Kathmandu. Additionally, Kulekhani, also known as Indrasarovar, the largest manmade lake in Nepal, is just a 40-minute walk from Chitlang.
