- Quindaro Ruins Overlook Structure - The group will walk to the Quindaro Ruins Overlook structure to enjoy a breathtaking view of the Mighty Missouri River while guides recount tales of freedom seekers who bravely crossed the Missouri River to reach freedom. The guide will share stories of how the Town of Quindaro was the first place where freedom seekers escaping slavery in Missouri set foot on free soil in Kansas territory, as part of their journey on the Underground Railroad.
- Quindaro Bluffs - The hike will lead participants through the scenic trails of the Quindaro Bluffs. They will see limestone ruins of buildings that pre-date the Civil War. Guides will share the stories of the ruins and the people who lived, worked, or sought refuge in the Town of Quindaro and beyond. The group will walk over a small creek, get a close-up view of the Missouri River, and pass under an active train bridge, all while learning about the area’s history.
- Quindaro Ruins Overlook Structure - Guides will lead groups to the Old Quindaro Cemetery to share stories of those interred there.
Additionally, the history of the Happy Hallow settlement and the development of the African-American community in the area will be discussed, highlighting the foundation for the establishment of Western University, the first Historically Black College & University (HBCU).
