The origin of its name is traced back to its terrain that uncannily resembles a clenched fist’s knuckles when observed from particular vantage points in the Kandy District. Though the British surveyors designated this name, Sinhalese inhabitants traditionally call the region Dumbara Kanduvetiya, translating to a mountain range enshrouded in mist. It comprises the Knuckles Mountain Forest Range that stretches over roughly 21,000 ha and was recognized as part of the Central Highlands World Heritage site in 2010. The range is distinctively detached from the Central Highlands by the Mahaweli river valley in the south and east, and by the Matale valley in the west.
