Kanchanaburi - Beginning of the Tour
Kanchanaburi is a city located in western Thailand, renowned for the Death Railway constructed during World War II. This railway line traverses the Khwae Yai River via the Death Railway Bridge. The JEATH War Museum showcases exhibits that pay tribute to the prisoners of war who perished while building the bridge. The Thailand-Burma Railway Center delves into the extensive history of the railway. Nearby, the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery is the final resting place for thousands of allied soldiers.
10:45 am - Embark on a train journey along a scenic route to Tham Krasae. Enjoy a lunch break and explore the area, including the Tham Krasae Bridge adjacent to the cave of the same name. In this region, the train slows to a crawl as it crosses the seemingly fragile Wang Pho viaduct. To the right, a towering rock wall stands, while to the left, there is a sheer drop to the river offering breathtaking views, another highlight of the journey.
After lunch, visit the Prasat Muang Singh Historical Park
Discover the remnants of the once-thriving Khmer Kingdom in one of Thailand’s most renowned Khmer-style religious structures. Historians estimate that Prasat Mueang Singh, along with its surrounding architecture on the bank of the Kwai Noi River, was constructed between 857 and 1157 as a religious temple of the Khmer kingdom. Prasat Mueang Singh was later deserted until the reign of King Rama I when Mueang Singh became a border town of Kanchanaburi. However, the restoration of the structures was not completed until 1987.
The remaining main structure is the Prasat Mueang Sing (the Tower of the City of the Lions), featuring Khmer-style architecture with influences from Lop Buri arts. It is enclosed by city walls measuring 800 x 1,500 meters. During excavations, historians uncovered valuable artifacts, antiques, ceramics, and religious ornaments with over 2000 years of history.
