A Journey Through Time and Nature

The journey began in Kanazawa, a city that has always held a special place in my heart for its blend of tradition and modernity. As we boarded the private bus to Unazuki Onsen, I was filled with anticipation. Our small group, consisting of a friendly Australian couple and our guide Garrett, set the tone for a day of camaraderie and exploration. Garrett, a manager at Snow Monkey Resorts Tours, was not only knowledgeable but also a captivating storyteller. His tales of the two-tailed cat mythology added a layer of mystique to the already enchanting landscape.

Unazuki Onsen, with its architecture reminiscent of a bygone era, welcomed us with open arms. The town’s charm lies in its ability to transport you back in time, offering a glimpse into the past while still being very much alive in the present. We strolled through the old hiking route to the Kurobe Dam, where Garrett shared insights into the area’s history. The air was filled with the scent of fresh mountain air, a prelude to the natural beauty that awaited us.

The Trolley Train Adventure

Our adventure continued as we boarded the trolley train at Unazuki Onsen Station. This was my first experience traveling on trains in Japan, and the open-sided trolley train was a revelation. As we journeyed through the gorge, the unobstructed views of the towering cliffs and lush greenery were nothing short of breathtaking. The cool breeze was a welcome respite from the warm day, and I found myself lost in the moment, fully immersed in the beauty of Kurobe Gorge.

Garrett’s enthusiasm was infectious as he pointed out the snow monkey bridge, a unique structure that allows these playful creatures to cross the river safely. Although we didn’t spot any snow monkeys that day, the sight of the bridge was a reminder of the harmonious relationship between nature and human ingenuity. As we reached Nekomata Station, Garrett regaled us with more stories of the two-tailed cat, a mythical creature said to bring good fortune.

Unwinding in Unazuki Onsen

After our trolley train adventure, we returned to Unazuki Onsen with time to spare. The town, with its serene atmosphere, offered the perfect setting for relaxation. I took the opportunity to soak my feet in one of the footbaths, the hot water a soothing balm for my travel-weary feet. The experience was a reminder of the simple pleasures in life, a moment of mindfulness amidst the day’s excitement.

As we made our way back to Kanazawa, I reflected on the day’s journey. The Kurobe Gorge Tour was more than just a sightseeing trip; it was a cultural immersion, a chance to connect with the land and its stories. The beauty of the gorge, the warmth of the people, and the rich tapestry of history and mythology left an indelible mark on my heart. I left with a renewed appreciation for the wonders of Japan and a promise to return, perhaps in the fall, when the leaves paint the landscape in hues of red and gold.
