It is the largest single religious complex constructed during the Angkorian Era, with an exterior enclosure spanning over 22 square kilometers, though its remote location makes it one of the less frequented Angkorian sites.
• Sambor Prei Kuk - The archaeological site of Sambor Prei Kuk, meaning “the temple in the richness of the forest” in Khmer, is identified as Ishanapura, the capital of the Chenla Empire that thrived in the late 6th and early 7th centuries AD. The site includes over a hundred temples, ten of which are octagonal, unique examples in South-East Asia. The decorated sandstone elements are characteristic of the pre-Angkor decorative style, known as the Sambor Prei Kuk Style. Some elements, such as lintels, pediments, and colonnades, are masterpieces. The art and architecture developed here set the foundation for the distinctive Khmer style of the Angkor period.
