Journey to Kibale Forest
Kibale Forest National Park - Following breakfast, you will depart Kampala for Kibale National Park in western Uganda. The journey takes approximately 8 hours, including a lunch stop in Fort Portal town.
During the drive, you will pass through numerous small towns, villages, tea plantations, and roadside markets, showcasing the picturesque Ugandan countryside. You will arrive in Kibale with ample time to relax and recover from the day’s travel.
Chimpanzee Tracking in Kibale National Park
Kibale Forest National Park - After an early breakfast, your driver/guide will take you to the Kibale National Park office for a briefing on tracking chimpanzees in their natural habitat.
You will embark on a guided primate walk to find chimpanzees and 12 other primate species, including l’ Hoestes, Red colobus, blue, red-tailed monkeys, brown monkeys, and grey-cheeked mangabey.
Park rangers will provide detailed insights into the primates and other forest flora and fauna, ensuring an informative and enjoyable walk.
Upon locating the chimps, you will spend an hour with them before returning to the park offices. You will then head back to the lodge for lunch and refreshments.
After lunch, you will visit the community and take a walk in Bigodi Swamp, home to the magnificent blue Turaco bird. The swamp hosts around 200 bird species and 8 primate species. Later, return to your accommodation for dinner and an overnight stay.
Explore Caves & Crater Lakes, Drive to Queen Elizabeth N.P
Kibale Forest National Park - After breakfast, begin the day with a cultural tour of the ‘Amabere Ga Nyina Mwiru’ caves, a significant historic site located 10km from Fort Portal town.
An informed guide will accompany you, sharing knowledge about the site. Remember to bring a flashlight, hiking boots, and long trousers for the cave exploration. Afterwards, hike the explosion crater lakes in the area, then return to Fort Portal town for lunch and a visit to the Tooro Kingdom Palace.
In the evening, travel to Uganda’s second-largest park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, while enjoying the changing views of the mystical Rwenzori Mountain ranges.
Wildlife Game Drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park
Queen Elizabeth National Park - After breakfast, embark on an early morning wildlife safari game drive. Queen Elizabeth National Park’s diverse ecosystem of grassy plains, tropical forests, rivers, swamps, lakes, and volcanic craters is home to an incredible variety of wildlife.
With the majestic Rwenzori Mountains as a backdrop, you will have excellent opportunities to see lions, leopards, giant forest hogs, cape buffalos, elephants, defassa waterbuck, Uganda Kobs, Topi, and bushbuck.
After lunch, enjoy a 2-3 hour boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel and into Lake Edward, where you may encounter one of the highest concentrations of hippos. Many animals can be seen drinking at the water’s edge.
This cruise offers fantastic opportunities for photography, bird watching, and game viewing. The vibrant bird life is remarkable, with over 600 different species.
Travel to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest - After breakfast, travel from Queen Elizabeth to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This 6-hour journey passes through the Kigezi Highlands, an area known as the “Switzerland of Africa.”
The route takes you through terraced hills and winding roads to the Bwindi forest, with a stop-over in Kabale for lunch.
Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest - Prepare for an encounter with Bwindi’s gentle giants, the rare Mountain Gorillas. For many, this is the highlight of their Ugandan tour. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is unique in Africa for hosting both Mountain Gorillas and Chimpanzees. It also supports five other primate species, 113 mammal species, over 200 butterflies, and 360 bird species.
The Gorillas you will track belong to one of nine habituated family groups that tolerate human presence for a brief period each day. Your trek will be an exciting journey through forested slopes, vines, bushes, and bamboo until you reach the Gorillas’ habitat. Along the way, your guide will point out signs of previous Gorilla activity, such as dung, nests, and chewed bamboo shoots.
Tracking the Gorillas can take between 2 to 7 hours. Once located, your group will spend a maximum of one hour with them. Encountering a Mountain Gorilla face-to-face is a truly humbling and emotional experience.
Visit the Equator – Return to Kampala or Entebbe
Uganda Equator - After an early breakfast, your driver/guide will take you from Bwindi to Kampala. This approximately 9-hour drive transitions from the cooler mountainous altitude of the Kigezi Highlands to the lower rolling landscape of Ankole and Buganda, featuring large farms and plantations interspersed with villages and small towns.
There will be several stopovers along the way, including the equator crossing in Kayabwe for photos. Depending on your flight schedule, additional stopovers can be arranged by your guide.
You should arrive in Kampala in the early evening, with enough time to freshen up before your departure from Uganda.
