Ngamba Island: A Sanctuary of Hope and Conservation

Drawn by the promise of a unique encounter with rescued chimpanzees, I set off for Ngamba Island. This sanctuary on Lake Victoria offers a glimpse into the world of these incredible creatures and the dedicated efforts to protect them.

Journey to Ngamba Island: A Sanctuary of Hope

The sun was just beginning to rise over Kampala as I embarked on my journey to Ngamba Island, a sanctuary for orphaned and rescued chimpanzees. The drive to Entebbe was a little over an hour, a scenic route that offered glimpses of Uganda’s vibrant landscapes. As a wildlife photographer, I was eager to capture the essence of this unique sanctuary, a place where chimpanzees find safety and companionship.

Upon reaching Entebbe, I boarded a small fishing vessel for the hour-long boat trip across Lake Victoria. The gentle waves and the cool breeze set the tone for the adventure ahead. The anticipation of meeting these incredible creatures, who have found a new home on this forested island, was palpable. Ngamba Island, established in 1998, is a testament to the collaborative efforts of local and international organizations dedicated to wildlife conservation.

A Day with the Chimpanzees

Arriving at Ngamba Island, I was greeted by Ruben, our knowledgeable guide, who shared the sanctuary’s history and mission. The island is divided by an electric fence, separating the human activity area from the lush forest where the chimpanzees roam freely. As I stood by the fence, I watched in awe as the chimps approached for their feeding session.

For a small fee, I had the opportunity to participate in feeding the chimpanzees, tossing avocados, eggplants, and cassava over the fence. It was a thrilling experience to observe their social interactions, from playful adolescents to nurturing mothers with their babies. One particularly clever chimp used a long stick to retrieve an avocado, showcasing their remarkable intelligence.

The presence of a researcher and a volunteer veterinarian added depth to the experience, as I engaged in conversations about their work and the challenges faced by the sanctuary. The dedication of the staff and volunteers was evident, and I felt privileged to support such a worthy cause.

Reflections and Farewell

The two hours on Ngamba Island flew by, leaving me with a profound appreciation for the sanctuary’s efforts in providing a safe haven for these chimpanzees. The visit was not only educational but also deeply moving, highlighting the importance of conservation and the impact of human actions on wildlife.

As I prepared to leave, I learned that the sanctuary relies solely on visitor fees for support, as government funding is not available. This realization reinforced the significance of eco-tourism and the role we play in sustaining such initiatives. Before heading back to Kampala, my guide, Diana, took me to a local shopping mall to purchase Ugandan coffee, tea, and snacks, a perfect way to bring a piece of Uganda back home.

Reflecting on my day at Ngamba Island, I was reminded of the power of collective efforts in conservation. The sanctuary stands as a beacon of hope, a reminder that even in the face of adversity, we can make a difference. For those with a passion for wildlife and a desire to support meaningful causes, a visit to Ngamba Island is an unforgettable experience.
