- The Great Mosque of Kairouan - The Great Mosque stands as the emblem of Kairouan. It ranks among the oldest and most stunning mosques globally, and is one of the most remarkable monuments in the Maghreb! Its religious significance elevates Kairouan to the status of the 4th holiest city in Islam. Visitors are captivated by its towering minaret, the grand courtyard of impressive scale, encircled by beautifully crafted arcades and featuring a sundial, along with the tall, intricately carved cedar wood doors. These doors lead to the prayer rooms, adorned with numerous marble columns. Constructed in 670, this architectural marvel, reminiscent of an adobe fortress, has inspired other mosques throughout the Maghreb.
- Medina of Kairouan - The medina of Kairouan is among the most well-preserved and authentic in Tunisia, offering a chance to explore the souks, savor Kairouan’s pastries “Les Mekroudhs,” and witness its traditional carpet making.
- Bassins Aghlabites - The Aghlabid basins are a historical monument in Tunisia, situated in Kairouan. Dating back to the early second half of the 9th century and located outside the medina’s walls, they are regarded as the most significant hydraulic works in the history of the Muslim world.
- Amphitheatre of El Jem - A visit to the Roman Colosseum, established in the 3rd century AD and designated as a world heritage site in 1972, which can host 30,000 spectators, ranks third in size in the Roman world after those in Rome and Capua. The amphitheater of El Djem is the most impressive Roman monument in Africa.
- Ribat of Monastir - This is the oldest and most significant of the defensive structures built along the Maghreb coast by Arab conquerors at the dawn of Islam. Established in 796, this structure underwent several renovations during the medieval era. Initially quadrilateral in shape, it consists of four buildings opening onto two interior courtyards. Besides the small cells of the “warrior monks” who, while fulfilling their military duties, dedicated themselves to prayer and contemplation, the Ribat contains two prayer rooms, the larger of which now houses rare religious artifacts and medieval crafts. A hundred spiral steps lead to the watchtower, from which light signals are exchanged at night with the towers of neighboring ribats, offering visitors a magnificent view of the city of Monastir and its surroundings.
