- Borobudur Temple - This renowned Buddhist temple, originating from the 8th and 9th centuries, is situated in central Java. It was constructed in three levels: a pyramidal base with five concentric square terraces, a cone-shaped trunk with three circular platforms, and at the summit, a grand stupa. The walls and balustrades are adorned with exquisite low reliefs, covering a total area of 2,500 m2. Surrounding the circular platforms are 72 perforated stupas, each housing a statue of the Buddha. The monument underwent restoration with UNESCO’s assistance in the 1970s.
- Prambanan Temples - Located near the Buddhist Borobudur temple, the proximity of these two temples indicates that Buddhism and Hinduism coexisted harmoniously in Java. Prambanan is a breathtaking sight and a symbol of Indonesia’s cultural heritage. The temples at Prambanan were constructed in the 9th century and are locally known as Roro Jonggrang, derived from the legend of the ‘slender virgin’.
The largest temple is dedicated to Shiva – the destroyer, while the two smaller temples on its right and left are dedicated to Brahma, the creator, and Vishnu, the sustainer. The tallest temple of Prambanan stands at an impressive 47 meters high. Its peak is visible from afar, towering above the ruins of the other temples.
