• 16 Rakaniwa Rock - Jūroku Rakan Iwa (Sixteen Arhat Rocks) is a remarkable coastal rock formation along the Sea of Japan in Sakata City, Yamagata Prefecture.

These rocks were carved by a Buddhist monk in the early 19th century as a tribute to sailors who lost their lives at sea. Each figure represents a Rakan (Arhat), a disciple of Buddha, and they are believed to watch over the ocean and pray for the safety of those at sea.
