Starting the Adventure: Lancelin
Lancelin - 1. Before leaving the city, the group will visit the supermarket to stock up on food. Typically, everyone contributes to a communal food fund to purchase ingredients for shared evening meals and basic items. This usually covers the entire trip.
- Lano is a favored weekend escape for Perth kite surfers, located just 2 hours north of the city. It’s an ideal spot to start kiting on the first day. The locals are welcoming, and it’s never too crowded to catch a wave or enjoy the freestyle lagoon. Lancelin’s offshore reef forms a natural harbor, allowing for flat water kiting inside the south point or surfing waves between the islands, just 800m from the shore.
Between Lano and Geraldton - Home of WAKSA’s Annual ‘Kitestock’ Festival
Wedge Island Point Beach - There are numerous kiting spots between Lano and Geraldton, allowing the group to decide where to stop for a session on the way up and back down the coast. Wedge Island is a hidden treasure with excellent wave riding conditions. Green Head is a small fishing and holiday town with lesser-known offshore reefs and a bay deep enough for foil riding and practicing tricks. Dongara has hosted WAKSA’s annual ‘Kitestock’ festival since 2007 and is a worthwhile stop for traveling kiters.
Geraldton - The Windiest City in the World
Geraldton - Geraldton is considered one of the windiest cities globally, with trees growing horizontally! It experiences daily averages of 20 knots in summer, with some days reaching double that. The beaches face various directions, offering waves and flat sections to satisfy everyone.
Coronation Beach - Famous for Wave Riding by Southern Swells
Shark Bay & Pink Lake - Stunning and Breathtaking Downwinders
Shark Bay - Shark Bay is a 130 km detour from the main highway heading north, visited before or after the Ningaloo Reef, depending on favorable conditions. It boasts more flat lagoons and virtually unexplored bays than the town’s population. The most iconic activity for kiters here is a breathtaking downwinder from Nicholson Point to Big Lagoon, where the ocean cuts into the heart of Francois Perron National Park.
Pink Lake - The Pink Lake is both beautiful and challenging. While the pictures are stunning and the water appears smooth, beneath the surface lies a bed of sharp salt crystals that can damage skin and kites. Additionally, the mud, shallow depth, and burning sensation when the water enters the mouth, ears, and eyes require confidence in one’s abilities. It’s not a pleasant experience! For those wanting the perfect photo, it’s suggested to save this stop for the return trip to Perth.
Sorka’s Point - The Natural Freestyle Playground
Carnarvon - The Twin Tippers
Coral Bay - Kite Over the Pristine Reef
Exmouth - The Kiter’s Paradise
Exmouth - Exmouth is a kiter’s paradise and likely the most popular holiday spot for WA kiters. It’s no wonder the Exmouth Surf Centre has a kite shop better stocked than those in the cities.

Kite with a Million Turtles @ Downwinder from Graveyards to Wobiri

Rather than a conventional tour bus, we see ourselves as a band of friends exploring the nation together, which allows us the freedom to spontaneously decide our daily destinations and itineraries. Western Australia boasts numerous legendary kitesurfing spots. The summer’s warmth generates a reliable and robust sea breeze, the Fremantle Doctor, which is propelled by the heated land drawing in cooler air from the Indian Ocean, typically reaching the coast with a consistent force of 15 to 20 knots from the South West, creating ideal kitesurfing conditions from Perth to Exmouth.
